The Darkest Dark | Chris Hadfield
20 posts | 17 read | 11 to read
Inspired by the childhood of real-life astronaut Chris Hadfield and brought to life by Terry and Eric Fan's lush, evocative illustrations, The Darkest Dark will encourage readers to dream the impossible. Chris loves rockets and planets and pretending he's a brave astronaut, exploring the universe. Only one problem--at night, Chris doesn't feel so brave. He's afraid of the dark. But when he watches the groundbreaking moon landing on TV, he realizes that space is the darkest dark there is--and the dark is beautiful and exciting, especially when you have big dreams to keep you company.

I knew this would be interesting and educational, but I didn't expect it to be so inspirational and beautifully written. It is a sweet book with gorgeous illustrations and a powerful message of reaching for, if you'll excuse the pun, the stars.

JackOBotts A great story! My son really enjoyed this one. 5y

This book is amazing for so many reasons. It‘s written by Chris Hadfield (who also narrates the read along version), he has a pug, it includes the first moon landing and is amazingly illustrated by the Fan Brothers. Perfect for anyone who‘s afraid of the dark. 5/5 #bbrc #AtoZ

The kids loved this book written by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield about a space-loving boy who's afraid of the dark. But when he watches the Apollo 11 moon landing, he learns that space is the darkest dark there is. It's inspired by Hadfield's own childhood experiences. Great illustrations too!

Bradleygirl I loved this one too. Chris Hadfield is everyone's favorite Canadian space grandpa. 6y

Here's my colleague pulling holds for library patrons in the dark today!
Courier service was also canceled today since so many libraries are without power- not to mention the stop lights.
We finally gave up waiting for the power to come on and went home (with City Manager approval).

Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield vividly remembers watching the first moon landing when he was a child. This is an adorable and inspirational picture book about conquering fear of the dark and achieving even greater goals. Charming illustrations by brothers Eric and Terry Fan.

This book is a joy on so many levels, but that goofy pug? And his dopey tongue? In a spacesuit? Perfection.

This is a great Christmas gift choice for kindergarten to Grade 2 or 3. Hadfield is such a treasure. I added it to my own library and my kids are teens.

My son adores this book! He's nearly 2 years old and loves everything repeated like a broken record. I don't mind reading this book to him every single time he asks (which is often!). It is really a cute, semi-autobiographical kid's book about when Chris Hadfield was a lad, watching the Moon landing in '69. It's a wonderful book. The story is inspiring and the illustrations are great!

This picture book is truly lovely. The Fan brothers' dreamy, whimsical art pairs with a beautiful tale about Hadfield being afraid of the dark as a young child. Watching the first moon landing at his neighbor's house was a transformative experience for him and instead of being afraid of the dark, he became curious. It made me tear up, for sure.

Did you know Colonel Hadfield, Canada's astronaut, was afraid of the dark as a boy. The Fan Brothers have beautifully illustrated this wonderful book for the 3-5 year old group. Find out how he conquered his fear and went to the darkest of dark places-space!
