John Wayne Gacy
John Wayne Gacy: Defending a Monster | Sam L. Amirante, Danny Broderick
9 posts | 9 read | 9 to read
Sam, could you do me a favor? Thus begins a story that has now become part of Americas true crime hall of fame. It is a gory, grotesque tale befitting a Stephen King novel. It is also a David and Goliath sagathe story of a young lawyer fresh from the Public Defenders Office whose first client in private practice turns out to be the worst serial killer in our nations history. Sam Amirante had just opened his first law practice when he got a phone call from his friend John Wayne Gacy, a well-known and well-liked community figure. Gacy was upset about what he called police harassment and asked Amirante for help. With the police following his every move in connection with the disappearance of a local teenager, Gacy eventually gave a drunken, dramatic, early morning confessionto his new lawyer. Gacy was eventually charged with murder and Amirante suddenly became the defense attorney for one of Americans most disturbing serial killers. It was his first case. This new edition of John Wayne Gacy, which contains updated material about the case that has come to light since the books original publication, recounts the gruesome killings and the famous trial that shocked a nation.

Pickpick

Before the Netflix special and this book, I didn‘t know much about JWG. I knew his moniker, Killer Clown, and the horror story that was his crawl space, which was enough for me (terrified of clowns because of ⬆️). Getting the perspective from the lawyer not only provided great detail into the man, the crimes, but also the law and procedure behind catching, and prosecution. A great read.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was thoroughly enjoying the narrator from the very beginning. His voice acting is phenomenal, but when we reach the part where Gacey unloads on his lawyer? This guy is giving a star quality read. Shout out to him! #currentlylistening

While my tangible reads are light, my audiobooks are quite dark. #currentlylistening

EvieBee Oooh. I just picked this up from the library because I was craving a little dark. 2y
StellaDz @EvieBee Oh I didn‘t know there was that one as well! The perspective from his lawyer is amazing. I can‘t even imagine. 2y

Everything that can be said about Gacy‘s story has been said umpteen times, but it was interesting to hear it from the perspective of his lawyer, Sam Amirante. However, I couldn‘t decide if I really liked or really detested the character he portrays himself as, or his addition to Gacy‘s story. There were points where he went into minutiae and repetition, which were a bit annoying when listened to as an audiobook. I enjoyed it on the whole, though.

Connster Bath bomb is Lush‘s Snow Fairy. Smells sickly sweet but I kinda like it. 3y

Interesting read. So awful that a man could take so many young lives.

I know I‘m a day early, but I will be avoiding Litsy tomorrow because I am terrified, TERRIFIED, of clowns. So, since tomorrow‘s #ScreamathonPhotoChallenge prompt is #ScaryClown, here‘s my real-life pick for the prompt and I will see you all in two days because I cannot scroll through a day‘s worth of Pennywise photos. Nope. Nope. Nope.

alisiakae I‘m sorry about tomorrow‘s prompt! Read some awesome books while you take a break. ☺️ 5y
Hooked_on_books Apparently on the desktop version of Litsy you can suppress certain hashtags. So if you go on there and suppress that hashtag, you shouldn‘t see any of the posts but you‘ll still get to see other posts (at least I think that‘s how it works). 5y
DGRachel @4thhouseontheleft No worries. October posts are always full of potential Pennywise photos, so Litsy is a minefield but I can‘t stay away for a full month. I forgot about suppressing hashtags, so I‘ll try that in the morning. Thanks for the reminder @Hooked_on_books 😘 5y
alisiakae @DGRachel I bought my hubby a Pennywose funko for his birthday, but then flipped out when he tried to display it on our bedroom bookshelf. I made him move it to another room, there was no way I was sleeping with that thing looking at me! 5y
DGRachel @4thhouseontheleft That‘s hilarious! I wouldn‘t even be able to have it in my house though. I don‘t know why I have developed this fear, though. When I was little, I used to watch a TV show hosted by a clown (can‘t remember the name) but probably around middle school, I think, is when clowns starting to freak me out and now even the emoji upsets me. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 5y

"It's funny, the people that wrap themselves most snugly in the American flag, the ones that scream the loudest about their freedoms and their constitutional rights are often the very people that lose sight of the meaning of all of that wonderful rhetoric as soon as push comes to shove, as soon as their precepts that we as a people so cherish come to be tested."
