The story could have happened to any of us, but it happened to a man named Flavieres. His days as a detective were over, and everyone knew he had his reasons. But when an old friend appeared out of nowhere with concerns about his withdrawn and mysterious wife, Flavieres didn't have the heart to refuse. And soon he would be scouring the streets of Paris in search of an answer - in search of a girl who belonged to no one, not even to herself. Soon intrigue would be replaced by obsession, and dreams replaced by nightmares. This is the story of a desperate man. A man who ended up compromising his own morality beyond all measure, while World War Two raged outside his front door. A man tormented - and destroyed - by a dark, terrible secret. This sinister, mindbending roman noir was turned into a 1958 Hollywood classic, starring James Stewart and Kim Novak, directed by the great Alfred Hitchcock. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Pickpick

An intriguing mystery, revolving around an obsessional neurotic's decent into psychosis. Flavières' fixation upon the otherworldly Madeleine is creepy from the outset, develops into unpleasantness, finally twisting into a controlling abusiveness. Well-worthy of the Hitchcock treatment, a psychological drama which left me with a bad taste in my mouth. 4/5🌟

"Outwardly he looked himself: inwardly he was ravaged, corroded, burnt-out, and blackened, his four walls left standing around a heap of wreckage."

saresmoore I‘ve loved this movie since I was a child—I think because I found his torment so relatable. Ha! Never thought to read the book, though! 4y
Bookwomble @saresmoore I loved watching Hitchcock movies as a kid, and still do. Bonus having Jimmy Stewart in a film. He plays such a great character, doesn't he, very different from the usual "tough guy" leading man of the era. 4y

I'm enjoying this story, set in Paris just as WWII is starting. The claustrophobic atmosphere is well described, and Hitchcock's casting of James Stewart in the film version as the introverted, neurotic protagonist was just right. I'll rewatch the film after finishing the book to check how faithfully he transferred the action to post-war San Francisco.

My second book of the year, selected because as I finished my first book, “Wildtrack“ by John Wain, the similarity of the cover design elements suggested it: orange and black with a spiral motif. A thin connection, but at least it led me to a TBR volume 😊

#Septembowie #lifeonmars @Marchpane @Cinfhen Last night on Arena ( radio show) this conference on Vertigo, Greatest Film Ever Made , was discussed. From the ups & downs of the hills of San Fran to the vortex in the Bun of Madeleines hair! Well, I get vertigo, looking up to see if there's #lifeonmars. ( close call, this is a tough one on #Septembowie) I had nothing, until the radio show. Its called Arena, on RTE radio 1. Well worth a listen.

Cinfhen 👍🏻 well done 7y
