On Earth as It Is Beneath
On Earth as It Is Beneath | Ana Paula Maia
7 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
In a remote corner of Brazil, life in a forgotten prison takes on a sadistic, deadly turn. On land where slaves were once tortured and murdered, the state built a penal colony in the wilderness, where inmates could be rehabilitated, but never escape. Now, decades later, and having only succeeded in trapping men, not changing them for the better, its operations are winding down. But in the prison's waning days, the warden has unleashed a new horror: every full-moon night, the inmates are released, the guards are armed with rifles, and the hunt begins. Every man plans his escape, not knowing if his end will come at the hands of a familiar face, or from the unknown dangers beyond prison walls. Ana Paula Maia has once again delivered a bracing vision of our potential for violence, and our collective failure to account for the consequences of our social and political action, or inaction. No crime is committed out of view for this novelist, and her raw, brutal power enlists us all as witness.

Wow this one packs a punch! Only 100 pages but very powerful. A penal colony is in the middle of nowhere with a warden who hunts the prisoners for sport. Different perspectives from the guard and the prisoners and the official who‘s sent there to close the place up. Will be thinking about this one for a long time. Thanks to all who recommended it and there are a lot of you!

squirrelbrain Definitely a lot to think about! 1d

As others have said, this book is brutal, though less so than I expected. It explores how one man‘s sadism can trickle down and impact so many, carrying on a legacy of violence and domination. Huh, oddly fitting for our current moment. I found the ending satisfying in some ways. #TOB26

In a remote penal colony in Brazil, the Warden has been hunting the inmates. As their numbers dwindle, desperation begins.

I didn't realize before I started this that it is a prequel to Maia's excellent Of Cattle and Men. Both books are brutal and bloody examinations of Man's propensity for violence, and the generational effects of the brutality as it infects the very land beneath their feet.

TheKidUpstairs Maia's prose is as merciless and visceral as the narrative, leaving the reader with the shocking feeling of being thrown into an icy lake. If you can handle the violence (including instances of violence towards animals), these books are well worth the read. Usually this level of violence would put me off, but under Maia's pen, it works. There is a third novella coming in August 2026 5d
squirrelbrain Oh, I didn‘t realise this was a prequel - I shall have to read the first (second?) one! 5d

“He and the world both changed, but not in time with each other. Valdenio got older, sick, not much sharper. The world renewed itself. To be thrown outside the walls would be to serve another sentence of survival and resistance that he couldn't stand to repeat.“

#ToB26 #13

This short, brutal novel hit me harder than I expected. Set in Brazil, in a remote penal colony where prisoners are released only to be hunted, it‘s stark and unsentimental, yet gripping. Maia writes violence without glorifying it. The bleakness is heavy, but the sharp writing kept me fully absorbed. So I am with you, Helen and Sarah!

As @squirrelbrain noted, this book is violent, but I also wasn‘t put off by it - it was necessary to the story and didn‘t feel gratuitous. It was powerful to read this short book in one go. I was tense in my plane seat until the very end. A propulsive pick by a Brazilian writer from #TOB2026.

squirrelbrain Good to see you appreciated it too. I read it in one sitting last night too - it‘s difficult to put down once you start. 2w

Chelsea.Poole Is there violence towards animals? 2w
squirrelbrain I nearly posted a TW on my review @Chelsea.Poole - yes, there is. 😬 Although I think it‘s more ‘off the page‘ than the violence against humans - what do you think Sarah? 2w
sarahbarnes @squirrelbrain @Chelsea.Poole I would agree with that assessment. 2w
Hooked_on_books Wow, good endorsement! I‘m even more curious about this one now. 2w
Chelsea.Poole @squirrelbrain @sarahbarnes animal harm/violence is definitely something I try to avoid. If it‘s something I could skip and go on and not have to encounter constantly I might give it a shot. 2w
sarahbarnes @Chelsea.Poole from my perspective I think that is definitely doable in this book. 2w
merelybookish This post fills me with envy for the DPL! Chances are I won't get my hands on this book but it sounds compelling! 2w
sarahbarnes @Hooked_on_books will be interested to see what you think of it! 2w
sarahbarnes @merelybookish the library system might be the one thing that keeps me from moving off the grid. 😆 2w

This is an INCREDIBLY violent book, but I didn‘t hate it - don‘t know what that says about me. 😬

There aren‘t many prisoners left in The Colony, because the governor releases 2 on each full-moon then pursues them to their death. What will happen if / when the authorities arrive to close the facility down?

I don‘t know if I should recommend this to anyone - just be prepared.

I‘m sure I‘ve missed someone who‘s reading the ToBlonglist - sorry!

TheKidUpstairs Of Cattle and Men was brilliant, and also very very bloody. I'll have to stack this one! 2w
Lesliereadsalot I‘ll try this one. 2w
