The story of a simple boy who becomes first a masseur, then a mystic, and finally an influential politician, is written in a satirical style, set in the ‘40s, and focuses on the Hindu community in #TrinidadAndTobago. A fun book that elicits a smile with its dry humor, but as with any satirical work, more important topics are beneath humorous parts.

I‘m currently reading World of Wonders and listening The Talented Miss Farwell ( with no disturbances from the outside world, I will finish both of them today) and the remaining three books are my pile of possibilities for the week.

Pickpick

A soft pick. This is a short, cynical, and humorous novel about one man‘s rise to prominence in Trinidad in the 1940-50s, despite his mediocrity. I did very much enjoy Ganesh‘s (the titular mystic) battles with his crafty father-in-law. There‘s some great characters in here. But I think I am too removed from the time and place to have really understood when Naipaul was poking fun. 🇹🇹

I wouldn't want to be miles near a person who says such things, but I don't judge books by the author.
It does change my perception but not my reading preferences. #thereisaidit

P.S: My baby is responsible for the crushed paper. He might have sensed that the words were trash.😁

CouronneDhiver Wow - those quotes are brutal. 6y
BiblioLitten @CouronneDhiver I know! Absolute crap 😡 6y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook I actually agree with three of those quotes... But good grief, the others! 6y

olivia.ferz I'm speechless. 😡 6y
BiblioLitten @olivia.ferz leave that, are you safe!?! In Kochi? 6y
olivia.ferz @BiblioLitten Yes I am. Thanks for asking😊 6y
olivia.ferz @BiblioLitten Kochi area hasn't been completely flooded YET. Though there is news that the level of water in the backwaters has been rising. It has been raining quite heavily with little break since Tuesday. So we packed all our emergency stuff in backpacks to go to relief camps in case it starts flooding here too. 6y
olivia.ferz @BiblioLitten Schools, colleges, large auditoriums and parish halls have all turned into relief camps. Though entire Kerala has been issued red alert, the major floods are in Aluva, Idukki, Alapuzha etc where roads and bridges have been broken because of the floods. 😥 6y
BiblioLitten @olivia.ferz It's a tough time. I hope it passed soon. I got your postcard😊 but can't find your address in the jb group list. I'll fish it out, no problem. 6y
BiblioLitten @olivia.ferz *passes. 6y
olivia.ferz @BiblioLitten 😊 I hope it passes too! I've sent a email to you with my address in case you need it. 6y
BiblioLitten @olivia.ferz oh that's great! Thanks 😊 6y
batsy I agree! I can't respect him as a person but even when people write out of hate it's interesting how their novels can still be illuminating, in a strange way. I've only read The Mimic Men but it was quite psychologically astute about the ramifications of colonialism. 6y
BiblioLitten @batsy I haven't read The Mimic Men. Only the Mystic Masseur, which was humorous but I didn't make me want to read his other works. I'm curious about 6y
batsy I'm interested in that one, too. It seems to be the agreed upon masterpiece of his and I'm curious to see how it stands up. 6y
RaimeyGallant I have a bad taste in my mouth. 6y

Went to the downtown bookstore in Red Wing, MN almost 2 years ago and the owner gave me this book for free since it was my first time in. Well he totally nailed it because this book was great and I wouldn't have read it without being handed it.
