Sweet and Deadly
Sweet and Deadly | Charlaine Harris
8 posts | 9 read | 6 to read
Newspaper reporter Catherine Linton ignored her investigative instincts when her parents died in a mysterious car crash six months ago grief obscuring the warning signs that something was amiss. But when she discovers the beaten body of her fathers nurse on Linton property, Catherine quickly realizes her parents death was no accident. Though the sleepy Southern town that Catherines family has called home for generations still prickles with racial tension and decades-old classism, Catherine never expected that Lowfield, Mississippi, could harbor a murderer. Now, it seems everyone has a terrible secret. But how many people in Lowfield would kill to keep them hidden? Catherine finds herself both the sheriffs lead suspect and the killers next target. With the help of her handsome editor, Randall, and her quirky fellow reporter, Tom, Catherine must untangle the dark roots of the murders and stop the killer who wears a neighbors face. Sweet and Deadly is the thrilling stand-alone mystery debut from Charlaine Harris, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Sookie Stackhouse vampire series, as well as the award-nominated Aurora Teagarden Series, Lily Bard Series, and Harper Connelly Series.

This was less fun than I was expecting - neither fast paced nor slow paced, gritty or cosy, funny or literary, I was never sure what it was going for and I didn‘t love the social attitudes. Not awful but I also can‘t think of much to recommend it #scarathlon #skeletoncrew

dragondrool For several years I had popcorn for dinner almost every Sunday night. Nothing wrong with that.

FantasyChick If being an adult means you can't have popcorn for dinner, I want no part of it 😉 5y

Day 1 between semesters has been a good one. It‘s a beautifully gloomy and rainy day, so my candles are lit, and I‘m just relaxing with my boys while I read another mystery. #rainydaysarethebestdays

alisiakae I have learned to love rainy days...as long as I don‘t have to go anywhere. 😂😂 5y

I know this author wrote the Sookie series (True Blood), but I was wondering if anyone had read any of her other books. This will be the first one if read of hers, and I can‘t wait to dig in. 🙌🏻

Scochrane26 I haven‘t read any of her others, but I‘ve heard good things about at least one of the other series, can‘t remember which one. Sorry, not much help. 😁 5y
TEArificbooks I have read them all, I liked her series Harper Connelly series best 5y
wanderinglynn I read everything she writes. I liked her Lily Bard (Shakespeare) & Harper Connelly series. Her Aurora Teagarden series is a fun cozy mystery style series. Midnight Texas trilogy is set in the same world as Sookie. And then I just got An Easy Death, the start of her new series, about a gunslinger in a world with magic. 5y

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Her early stuff is great. Lily Bard is possibly her strongest and most gritty. I loved Harper (and it‘s a trilogy, so easy to devour) and I‘ve read most of the Aurora books... Midnight Texas was a fun read but hardly her best work 5y
LA_Mead I loved her “Grave” series (can‘t remember what they‘re actually called now.) Also, the new Gunnie Rose series is great. 5y
Bookzombie I read 7 or 8 of the Sookie series, but my favorite series so far is the Harper Connelly series. (edited) 5y

Half way through. Sweet and deadly finished. A secret rage to come.

These definitely feel very different to the Charlaine Harris books I pick up every summer holidays! But it perked up towards the end and Catherine became the more badass-female lead Harris is so great at writing! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

What did I just read?! I have never been disappointed in anything Charmaine Harris has written until now.
Apparently this was one of her first books, published in 1981! Did not feel like it was that 'old'. Her writing didn't feel 'aged' so I give Charlaine Harris props for that!

Suzze My favorite series of hers starts with this one. Try it if you haven't already. 7y
Mommamanzi I did! I liked them but I am a die hard Aurora Teagarden fan. Have you read that series? 7y

Sometimes this is the only chance I get to read a chapter or two during the day. Sometimes I don't even get this.

Librarianaut #mommyissues. Seems like one if the biggest jokes in the universe is that being home with a baby *should* mean a little downtime every now and then but ends up meaning less free time than if you're working like a dog in an office... 7y
