The Art of a Lie | Laura Shepherd-Robinson

'A breathtaking, tension-filled, kaleidoscopic whirl . . . This book has it all. Masterful' - Abir Mukherjee, bestselling author of Hunted The Art of a Lie is a beguiling cat-and-mouse thriller played out across the streets of 18th-century London. From The Sunday Times bestselling author of The Square of Sevens, Laura Shepherd-Robinson. That's the trouble with stories, especially the ones you write for yourself. Sometimes you think they've ended, when they've barely begun . . . London, 1749. Following the murder of her husband in what looks like a violent street robbery, Hannah Cole is struggling to keep her head above water. The Punchbowl and Pineapple, her confectionary shop on Piccadilly, is barely turning a profit. Henry Fielding, the famous author and new magistrate, is threatening to confiscate the money in her husband's bank account, because he believes it might have been illicitly acquired. And even those who claim to be Hannah's friends have darker intent. Only William Devereux seems different. A friend of her late husband, Devereux helps Hannah unravel some of the mysteries surrounding his death. He also tells her about an Italian delicacy called iced cream, an innovation she is convinced will transform the fortunes of her shop - if only she can learn how to make it. But their friendship opens Hannah to speculation and gossip and draws Henry Fielding's attention her way, locking her into a battle of wits more devastating than anything, even her husband's murder. Praise for Laura Shepherd-Robinson: 'This rich, complex and haunting Dickensian epic is a triumph of the Gothic genre' - Janice Hallett, bestselling author of The Appeal, on The Square of Sevens 'The best historical crime novel I will read this year' - The Times on Daughters of Night 'A page-turner of a crime thriller . . . This is a world conveyed with convincing, terrible clarity' - C. J. Sansom, bestselling author of Tombland, on Blood & Sugar

While well written and cleverly done, I found the ending out of character and unsatisfying.
But I can‘t say more without revealing the plot. 🤫😑

This is a clever, easy to follow, well researched, historical fiction with both thriller and romance aspects. It is set in 18th century England and told from 2 POVs. I enjoyed that the writing enabled me to feel empathy for both the main characters. There were good twists, lots of wonderful period detail, and the author has included some real people as characters, so it was educational as well. I loved it. Thanks to Edelweiss+ for the ARC. 5/5

Loved the story and especially appreciated the research about Georgian society, shops around St James's and conman schemes of that period that went into this book.

Thanks @RaeLovesToRead for "pushing" me to read this.

RaeLovesToRead I would spoiler tag the first bit because it was a plot twist!!!!!! So glad you enjoyed it ❤️ 2mo

RaeLovesToRead Also, she totally Romeo-and-Julietted us there at the end 😭😭😭😭 2mo
julesG @RaeLovesToRead that was a twist I didn't anticipate. I didn't expect them to end up together, but I also didn't expect William to die (whether by his own hand or possibly by his friend's). 2mo

Great talk today - saw Laura Shepherd-Robinson and Essie Fox talk about their new books!

Can't wait for The Art of a Lie because I LOVED the Square of Sevens (recommended to me by @julesG )
