Highway Thirteen: Stories | Fiona McFarlane

A gripping, enigmatic collection of linked short stories about the reverberations of a serial killers crimes in the lives of everyday people. In the small town of Barrow, Australia, people go about their ordinary lives. They drive to work through the dense state forest. They raise their families. They flirt and yearn. They lie and confess. Some of them leave home. Some of them return. Darkness thrums beneath the surface of these ordinary lives: the violence of one man, a serial killer whose murders made Barrow infamous. His twelve victimswomen, men, mostly youngare long gone, but their deaths are felt, beyond the forest where they were buried, beyond this country, beyond even this time. In the past, where a young woman on a school trip to Rome sees something she shouldnt have. In the present, where a man confronts an ancient grief on the suburban streets of Texas. In the future, in the hands of journalists and podcast hosts and television actors whose livelihoods hinge on the twin spectacles of loss and violence. Highway Thirteen is a luminous wonder: a book about the collisions between public and private selves, between parents and children, between history and what comes after, between the living and the dead. Fiona McFarlanes roving vision is itself a story about storiesthose we tell, retell, forget, sell, disprove, inherit, live throughand a work of extraordinary power and magic.

Paul Biga,an Australian taxi driver who picks up young women and men, then kills them is at the center of each story without ever being the main character.Yet the characters in each story are somehow affected by the murders. There‘s Eva,principal of the school Biga attended&his former neighbor,Simon whose sister is one of his victims or Grace who fought back&got away.

Anna40 I loved the first stories, the last, except Chaperone, didn‘t draw me in as much. I hated the podcast story, this seems to be a trend, writing a story in form of podcast / radio episode transcript. I don‘t like it and don‘t think it works. The writing is outstanding. 2mo
squirrelbrain Great review! I have this on my TBR shelf. 2mo
Anna40 @squirrelbrain thanks!!! I really liked the first 3 or 4 stories and Chaperone. The writing as I said is great in all of them. Enjoy!! I placed a hold for her debut novel at the library and it‘s ready for me to pick up. Looking forward to that 2mo

Bailedbailed

I suspect this may be a case of blame the reader, not the book. I enjoyed some of the stories, but others didn't work as well. Each new story I had to force myself to start reading. I may try again if my library gets a physical copy, which would be easier for me to dip in and out of around other reads!

Some of the stories were really strong, so if the premise interests you don't let my bail put you off (but I'd recommend a borrow, not buy)

Thanks for the gift, Jess @jhod ! We just got back from our hols today and it was waiting for me.

Henry had a fun time in Keswick - visiting The Pocket Bar twice and being made a fuss of by the staff in there!

It sounds like a fascinating book and I‘m sure I‘ll love it - I‘ve looked up the reviews and they‘re not *that* mixed - pretty positive, I think.

TrishB And so beautifully modelled ❤️ 12mo

Though I don‘t typically gravitate towards short story collections, the premise of this one caught my attention! Spanning decades & continents, these stories interconnect around a string of serial murders in the 1990s in Australia. As with many collections, some of these are more gripping than others & some will linger on in my memory. I would have rather read a novel tying these stories together but I don‘t know the scope would‘ve been as broad!
