I live in Halifax, so I think it made this a little more fun to read. I know those streets and those places. The city is surprisingly similar to what it was then. A little bigger maybe. It‘s a very simply written story. An easy read when your brain is a little broken and tired from being sick.
Our whole house was knocked out by a nasty virus this week. I haven‘t been able to read for three days. But today everyone is fever free. We are spending this long weekend resting and getting strong again. And reading! (Hubby read that red lights are good for relaxing. I‘m not sure. But it really makes the cat‘s look demonic.)
3.75⭐️ I really liked the concept of the story, but I felt that it was written just a little too simplistic. I also really liked that she wrote a book based on an event that is rarely used as the basis for a book. #2025 #bookreview #wwi #halifaxexplosion #canadianfiction #historicalfiction
Before reading this book, I had never heard of the explosion in the Halifax harbor. While I enjoy learning new things, I can‘t imagine what these people went through. Many of them lost their entire families, even their children. This book took us through the lives of two families who lost almost everything in the disaster. The main morale of this story is that family is everything.
We meet Nora, Charlotte, and their families in Halifax, Nova Scotia, during WWI and when an explosion in Halifax destroyed the entire area and killed many of their family members.
A lovely, heartwarming read despite the heartaches, but a tribute to mankind during tragedies and the strength of family.
Based on a true event and had me looking for more information on the explosion. 5/5

When The World Fell Silent
Donna Jones Alward is a new author for me. Her book is amazing. It's so very touching and emotional. What she has written here is a beautiful story of a tragedy that actually happened in 1917 in Halifax Harbour. In Canada.
A must read..

This is an historical fiction novel based on the 1917 Halifax explosion, which was the largest man-made explosion before the atomic bomb. It is about 2 young woman, one a nurse and another a young widowed mother. I learned more about the events and the book also prompted further research into the tragedy, something I love about this genre. I really enjoyed the story and the strong female characters. Thanks to NetGalley for the digital ARC. 4.5/5
