Buried Deep and Other Stories | 
A few days ago I went to an author talk & book signing for Naomi Novik (caught her at an unflattering moment 🫣) & it was the best author event I've been to so far! She spoke about her inspirations for her Scholomance series & the process of working w artists to bring her vision of the school itself out of her head & onto the page. I've only read 2 of her books, so far, but I'm going to read this series soon! I'm thinking right after Christmas. 😊
pickI absolutely adore Naomi Novik‘s writing. I don‘t know which story was my favorite: “Spinning Silver,” the story that turned into the novel, with quite a bit of the exact same language but a very different ending; “Dragons & Decorum,” which could also be called “Elizabeth Bennet, dragon rider”; or “Castle Coeurlieu,” like a dark retelling of a fairy tale that never existed.

I really do adore Novik‘s writing. She has such a gift for scene setting, intriguing characters, & making a tone fit the story. This definitely did its job, because I want to immediately dive into her other books. I put her 1st Scholomance book on hold, double checked I own an audio copy of Spinning Silver.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

Okay, after attending my favorite local indie bookstore's big 10 year anniversary sale this morning, and then meeting someone from Facebook Marketplace for a couple of other books, this is the state of my TBR shelves.
I am now officially on a book buying break, I think I'm going to say until I've finished at least around half of these books.
That's reasonable, right?! 😆

Lots of fantasy, fairy tales, & alternate history as Novik revisits the worlds of her novels. There‘s also a thought-provoking science fiction story which delves into colonization, the natural world, & war. And there‘s a story set in the world of her next novel. I really enjoyed this one.
Short story collection from Novik up next! And for a bonus, one of the stories is set in Abandon, rhetorical world where Novik‘s next fantasy is set. Excited to dive in.
