#AprilBookShowers Day 7 - Women in Translation

These are just some of the women authors in translation that I have on my shelves. I'm especially grateful to the publisher Europa Editions for making so many works available in English!

My_novel_obsession @RiotMom I can't wait to read it! I think 2017 may be my year of nonfiction. I have several great books to read. 7y
Godmotherx5 I've wanted that tee for ages. 7y
ReadingEnvy "we wish to inform you" is rough (but important!!) ... For another perspective on events I'd also recommend 7y
Zelma We Wish to Inform You... has been on my TBR for years and I can't bring myself to sit down and read it. I need to, but I never decide that, ok, now I will horrifically depressed. 7y
Weaponxgirl We wish to inform you was a amazing read, cried like a baby but it's a important read. Then if you really want to brutalise yourself watch hotel Rwanda afterwards. 7y

#FunFridayPhoto I'm thankful for this book, which bears witness to the atrocities committed against USSR citizens by Joseph Stalin's government. It's a warning for what can happen when corrupt leaders are unchecked in their power.

8leagueboot I think I need this. 7y
quirkyreader This might be one of the next #Persephonebooks I get. I lost family members during the pogroms and political sweeps. 7y
Hooked_on_books Sounds very powerful. And what a beautiful cover. 7y
BooksForYears @quirkyreader I'm so sorry for your family's loss. The way the prisoners were treated was inhumane - similar to the Nazi concentration camps. A harrowing and powerful read but very worth it. 7y

Reading makes me happy, and reading Persephone Books gives me special joy. They are also reeling from this week's political news, and blogged today that they are mailing one of their books (The World That Was Ours), about overcoming political oppression in apartheid South Africa, to Hillary Clinton as a thank-you for her efforts.

Oh, and eating steamed dumplings also makes me happy 🍣

charl08 That's a powerful book. Hope HRC gets to read it. 7y

Susannah Thank you for posting. The book gift is nice to hear about. I've been a little too immersed in post-election news today, and for me, far too much of it has been full of finger pointing about why HRC lost. Apparently, the self-care part of our week is over. 🤕 7y
Theresa I made my very first Persephone Books purchase because of this post! I hadn't heard of them before & when I found their website I thought, " I must have all of them!" Alas, reason won out & I started with just 1. ? 7y
kspenmoll I need yo check out their website; thx . What a lovely idea to gift a book to HC. 7y

Another #NonFictionNovember read I'm starting today is INTO THE WHIRLWIND, the account of the author's experiences under Stalinist USSR. A victim of the Great Purge, she was expelled from the Communist Party, tried farcically, and sentenced to 18 years imprisonment, hard labor, torture, and eventual exile.

Theresa So it's a comedy??? 😂😂😂 Just kidding. It sounds fascinating! Looking forward to your review. 7y

Journey into the Whirlwind | Eugenia Ginzburg

As I lay awake on my plank bed, the most unorthodox thoughts passed through my mind—about how thin the line is between high principles and blinkered intolerance, and also how relative are all human systems and ideologies and how absolute the tortures which human beings inflict on one another.
