A so so atmospheric story told with two time lines and two mysteries, overall was entertaining but wasn‘t as good as Mexican Gothic or The Daughter of Doctor Moreau

I really love when Chanel Cleeton‘s books are wrapped in Cuban/American history so I was disappointed that we didn‘t experience in real time Carolina and Carmine growing up in Havana. As a mystery it was a bit of a slow burn but still satisfying. What I liked most was the atmospheric 1920s and 40s Miami vibe. And the peacocks - if you‘ve had daily experiences with a pride of peacocks (I have) you‘ll appreciate their characterization here.
MYSTERY - HISTORICAL FICTION
How could a mansion with such a beautiful name - Marbrisa - be the scene of murders?
Murders, secrets, and a mansion abound in this marvelous Gothic-style read with undercurrents of menace that you can‘t figure out if the menace is coming from a person, place, or thing.
AND…how about that gorgeous cover?

The problem with auto-buy authors is just that: I buy without even checking to see what it's about. I ended up disappointed that this was a murder mystery and not the HF I've come to love; hence the so-so rating. However! Cleeton's writing is so engaging it saw me through a genre that isn't really my cup of tea.

This was such a good mystery. I‘ve loved all of Chanel Cleeton‘s books.

I've found a new author for me. Though she has written a few books I've not read any until now. This book was great. Part history, thriller, mystery, love story, and a touch gothic.
I enjoyed this book from the very start. It is one of the best I've read. This book has a lot going on and I highly recommend it.

I've been waiting almost a year for this!!
I need to just rant for a second: I now officially hate Barnes and Noble after years of simmering anger with them. The local store I've been going to since moving to CO 4 years ago is The. Worst. I have yet to buy a book from them that isn't marred or damaged (including NR on release day). Today I had to search for this bc it was shelved no where near new releases AND this was the only copy out🤬⬇️
Happy Pub Day!!
