Homecoming
Homecoming: A Novel | Bernhard Schlink
4 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
Growing up with his mother in Germany, Peter Debauer knows little about his father, an apparent victim of the Second World War. But when he stumbles upon a few pages from a long-lost novel, Peter embarks on a quest that leads him across Europe to the United States, chasing fragments of a story within a story and a master of disguises who may or may not exist. Homecoming is a tale of fathers and sons, men and women, war and peace. It reveals the humanity that survives the trauma of war and the ongoing possibility for redemption. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Love this idea. On my travels on the way home from Byron Bay Writer‘s Festival, I came across these free books donated by the local library at Casino train Station. I took the tagged book home with me. It was a long wait at this station, an hour longer than it was supposed to be due to signal failure at Brisbane. I was ok with it as what else can you do? I stood in the sun reading as I knew I‘d be sitting on my butt on the train for hours later.

Pickpick

As a kid, Peter spends the summer vacation at his grandparents. They work as editors, and they start sending him home with the used paper. This is after the war and paper is expensive. His grandparents tell him not to read the stories, but one day he does. Peter gets completely hocked into it, so much so that he as an adult start looking for the end and information about the author.

I just made it home from my mom‘s house. It‘s so nice to be home, but I‘m glad that I was able to spend the time with her, after the loss of my step-dad. This was the last picture that I had with him. It was taken when he officiated my best friend‘s wedding in October.

AmyG I‘m so sorry for your loss. And you both look so happy in that picture...what a special memory. 6y
