The Haunting of Velkwood
The Haunting of Velkwood | Gwendolyn Kiste

From Bram Stoker Awardwinning author Gwendolyn Kiste comes a chilling novel about three childhood friends who miraculously survive the night everyone in their suburban hometown turned into ghostsperfect for fans of Yellowjackets. The Velkwood Vicinity was the topic of occult theorists, tabloid one-hour documentaries, and even some pseudo-scientific investigations as the block of homes disappeared behind a near-impenetrable veil that only three survivors could enterand only one has in the past twenty years, until now. Talitha Velkwood has avoided anything to do with the tragedy that took her mother and eight-year-old sister, drifting from one job to another, never settling anywhere or with anyone, feeling as trapped by her past as if she was still there in the small town she so desperately wanted to escape from. When a new researcher tracks her down and offers to pay her to come back to enter the vicinity, Talitha claims shes just doing it for the money. Of all the crackpot theories over the years, no one has discovered what happened the night Talitha, her estranged, former best friend Brett, and Grace, escaped their homes twenty years ago. Will she finally get the answers shes been looking for all these years, or is this just another dead end? Award-winning author Gwendolyn Kiste has created a suburban ghost story about a small town that trapped three young women who must confront the past if theyre going to have a future.

With an unusual premise— 20 years earlier, something strange happened to the 8 houses on Velkwood St— only three 20 year olds survived and the rest seem to have instantly become ghosts & no one can enter the vicinity… except for the three now women. Talitha agrees to return for research… and because the past weighs heavily on her. Part ghost story & part love story, there are some creepy moments but nothing was believable enough to be scary…

TorieStorieS @Susanita Hahaha! I have been clearing things out of my dad‘s basement and couldn‘t bring myself to put it in the donation pile! It‘s a little spooky looking so I‘m going to figure out a Halloween spot for it, hahaha! 7d

Ughhhh. This had so much potential. Talitha Velkwood still reeling from a tragic event 20 yrs ago gets an offer to go back to her haunted street she left. That piece of haunted street that exists in its own reality separate from our own. One only Talitha and 2 other girls can enter. It could have used more characterization, I‘m not a fan of going back and forth between places where nothing really happens or gets moved forward. I did like her 👇🏼

Reggie writing ability to write about and around something without giving it away but that got old real quick. I would like a lesbian to tell me what they think about this book. Loved the ending but didn‘t enjoy the journey. Mehhh 2mo
sarahbarnes This definitely sounds intriguing. Sorry it sounds like it fell short for you. 2mo
Reggie @sarahbarnes AND it won the Bram Stoker award for best novel this year!!! thank you, Sarah. 2mo

LeahBergen Oh, too bad! 2mo
Suet624 It‘s even more disappointing considering it won the award for this year. 2mo
Reggie @LeahBergen it probably didn‘t help that I listened on audio and the girl reading it was fully embodying the character sounding depressed and on Xanax or something. And it was a bright sunshine day and I‘m on vacation. But rainy day Reggie still would have thought meh. lol 2mo
Reggie @Suet624 sometimes Denzel wins the Oscar when you want it to go to Russel and sometimes Russell wins the Oscar‘s when you want it to go to Denzel. 🤷🏽‍♂️ 2mo
Centique I love your comment about what rainy day Reggie would have thought 😝 2mo

stretchkev Yeah this was something I gave up on, thought maybe too early. Now i don't feel so bad.

The Bram Stocker has been kind of meh this year.

Reggie @stretchkev you made the right choice. It was a soft sapphic love story dressed up in a weak, weak, story. I haven‘t read the rest of the nominees. But my hopes aren‘t high after this. 2mo

This was a unique ghost story about a haunted street named after the first residents, Talitha Velkwood and her family.
One night, the whole neighborhood just vanished. The only survivors were three of the girls who were away at college. Now, a research group and Talitha are going back 👻

While college friends & neighbors Brett, Talitha & Grace are away at school they are notified that their neighborhood has disappeared. Twenty years later Talitha is approached by a researcher to return to the area as pictures obtained from a recent drone show that there is possible activity in her old house. I read this one in just a couple of hours this morning. I was absolutely riveted by this unique take on the haunted house trope (CONT)

vivastory & was moved by Kiste's explorations of how the ghosts of the past (both in a very real & metaphorical sense) will continue to haunt us. 13mo

Talitha, Brett & Grace were college age when they escaped Velkwood street before it slipped beyond the veil.

For 20 years everyone from serious researchers to ghost hunters have investigated the phenomenon & hounded the girls for interviews.

Secrets, a significant haunting, creepiness & a forbidden sapphic romance that‘s a significant subplot which leads to a satisfying ending.

This would be a good book to add to an October TBR!

What makes a haunting? 20 years ago, an entire street disappears with only 3 girls escaping. This book takes a unique look at the haunted house trope. How someone can be haunted as much by grief and loss as something supernatural. 4 out of 5 stars.

Another amazing listen! This was not at all what I was expecting. It truly is such a unique premise about a street where the actual homes and most of its residents seem to have disappeared (or have they?) and the few residents who weren‘t at home are trying to figure out what happened. It‘s also a tender look at love and loss and the secrets we hide from even ourselves. I‘ll be thinking about this one for a while! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Book 35📚 4⭐️

Such a unique take on a haunting, definitely not like any I have read before.

Something happened the night Brett, Grace and Talitha left town… and it wasn‘t just that the entire street started to vanish. Stuck between dead and alive, no one has entered Velkwood Street in 20 years, until now.

20 years ago 3 girls escaped from a neighborhood that disappeared into a ghost realm. It is still visible to outsiders but no one can enter except these girls. Now Talitha has been offered money to return.
This book is loaded with secrets and mystery. As childhood memories are dredged up, we learn the truth about what happened 20 years ago. I was very interested to learn what happened in Velkwood. A unique and creepy story.
