My Diary from the Edge of the World
My Diary from the Edge of the World | Jodi Lynn Anderson
14 posts | 12 read | 7 to read
Told in diary form by an irresistible heroine, this playful and perceptive novel from the New York Times bestselling author of the May Bird trilogy sparkles with science, myth, magic, and the strange beauty of the everyday marvels we sometimes forget to notice.Spirited, restless Gracie Lockwood has lived in Cliffden, Maine, her whole life. Shes a typical girl in an atypical world: one where sasquatches helped to win the Civil War, where dragons glide over Route 1 on their way south for the winter (sometimes burning down a T.J. Maxx or an Applebees along the way), where giants hide in caves near LA and mermaids hunt along the beaches, and where Dark Clouds come for people when they die. To Gracie its all pretty ho-humuntil a Cloud comes looking for her little brother Sam, turning her small-town life upside down. Determined to protect Sam against all odds, her parents pack the family into a used Winnebago and set out on an epic search for a safe place that most people say doesnt exist: The Extraordinary World. Its rumored to lie at the ends of the earth, and no one has ever made it there and lived to tell the tale. To reach it, the Lockwoods will have to learn to believe in each otherand to trust that the world holds more possibilities than theyve ever imagined.

My goal this weekend was to finish my #lmpbc book, and I managed it! Overall, it was a fun read and I really liked the main character. Good choice! @merelybookish @IndoorDame @LibrarianRyan

A pick, barely. I found the story of family interpersonal dynamics and survival very compelling, like a #middlegrade version of “Life As We Knew It” or “How I Live Now.” I found the fantasy world building wholly unconvincing and overexplained, although I think few kids would be bothered by that. The diary format felt a bit forced too. Still, I read this in 1 day over a couple sittings in a week I‘m barely able to focus, and I can‘t discount that.

emtobiasz The YA books I reference: 5y
Lindy I like your review. A book can have flaws and still be worth reading. 5y

emtobiasz @Lindy Agreed, particularly because I don‘t think my complaints are what the target audience would care about. 5y
Johanna414 I‘m reading it right now - it feels a little long. 5y
emtobiasz @Johanna414 I thought so too, although the pace picks up after the first 100 pages or so. I know it would lose a lot of kids before then, though. 5y

I‘m not sure why I brought such an ambitious stack of books home this weekend, considering today‘s (hopefully) 2 hour nap time is literally the only reading time I‘ll get... But it‘s a beautiful afternoon on the porch and I‘m making the most of it! #momlife #letmeread

Hi guys, heading to the post office (late because of Labor Day + 😷) with this as yet unaddressed package which I‘m 99% sure is going to @Johanna414 but when I looked to make sure I got super confused about our mailing order because it looked to me like this package would have come to me from @LibrarianRyan but I thought I remembered it coming from @merelybookish ? Sorry to ask, but would one please of you just reminded me of our mailing order?

LibrarianRyan @Johanna414 >@LibrarianRyan> @Merelybookish >@IndoorDame >@Johanna414 (i think) The first 3 in the equation is correct, so the last one must be correct as well. (edited) 5y
IndoorDame @LibrarianRyan awesome! Thank you!!! 5y
Johanna414 @IndoorDame @LibrarianRyan @merelybookish Thanks! I have like 20 pages left in my book (and have had literally no time to read 😭😭😭) so I‘m going to try to finish up on my lunch break and send it out tomorrow. 5y
merelybookish @Johanna414 @indoordame @LibrarianRyan Im also planning to mail out tomorrow! 5y

Picked up my #lmpbc book from the Tattered Cover yesterday.
I plan to read and send it off soon, as I'm leaving town in early July and won't be back till August. Sooo....for mailing, who sends to who? Shall we follow the order in @suvata's email or switch it up to go due west/ east?
@LibrarianRyan @Johanna414 @IndoorDame

LibrarianRyan Normally we do the order in the email. But I am all for east to west. Cheaper shipping to people that are closer. But that would put one person paying for a longer shipment. using book rate it is not much of a difference, and I am good either way, but I don't want to speak for the group.

BTW the miss the #TatteredCover. I probably say that anytime anyone mentions it.
(edited) 5y
vivastory Are you going somewhere exciting? 5y
merelybookish @LibrarianRyan I'm happy to do east to west. I was already slated to mail east so doubt it would make much difference whether it's to NY or MA. Did you live in Denver? And yes, The Tattered Cover is a wonderful bookstore! 5y

merelybookish @vivastory Well, I wouldn't say exciting, exactly but I am looking forward to it. ? I'm heading "home" to New Brunswick to visit my family in Canada. 5y
LibrarianRyan @merelybookish Yes, for 5 years. I went to grad school at DU and worked for the Highlands Ranch Public Library (Douglas County) full time as well as Arapahoe County Libraries (hired for the Glendale branch that was a block from my apartment, but kept getting sent to Sheridan), and for Littleton Public Library (one of the worst libraries I have ever worked for) 5y
IndoorDame I'm happy to do eat to west as well. Let's make a post with the order we're settled on. And have a fabulous trip! 5y
merelybookish @LibrarianRyan Oh that's cool! I don't really know those areas. I'm in Lakewood so more west. Too bad about Littleton. I find JeffCo libraries pretty good but maybe they vary within a county. 5y
merelybookish @LibrarianRyan My preferred Tattered Cover is the Colfax location. 🙂 5y
LibrarianRyan @merelybookish I‘ve been in Jeff Co libraries. When I was there there was a major funding shortage for JeffCo libraries. My fav Tattered no longer exists. I loved Cherry Creek. I didn‘t live to far. Colfax just opened when I left. I went to the HR branch frequently but I know it has been shuttered as well. But then again I spent the most time at the Mall location because that was where the signings were. (edited) 5y
Johanna414 I‘m good with East to West if that‘s what everyone else would like. 5y
merelybookish @LibrarianRyan Yeah the locations are very different now! Colfax is where they host most of their signings, although Aspen Grove in Littleton gets the YA & MG authors. 5y
merelybookish Okay if everyone is good with east to west the order would be @indoordame ➡️ @Johanna414 ➡️ @LibrarianRyan ➡️ @merelybookish 5y
LibrarianRyan @merelybookish works for me. 5y
Johanna414 @merelybookish sounds good! 5y

Starts off goofy & quickly becomes littered with "ow" moments that sneak up on you. It's like magical realism got mixed up with Night Vale & the result is stellar. Whatever you think the resolution of this book is going to be, you're probably wrong.

Easytiger The best thing about Nightvale is Cecil and Carlos ❤️ nothing like this :3 8y
Easytiger This More like gravity falls off Disney XD 😝 8y
