A sparkling second-chance romance inspired by Jane Austens Persuasion... Nada Syed is stuck. On the cusp of thirty, shes still living at home with her brothers and parents in the Golden Crescent neighbourhood of Toronto, resolutely ignoring her mothers unsubtle pleas to get married already. While Nada has a good job as an engineer, its a far cry from realizing her start-up dreams for her tech baby, Ask Apa, the app that launched with a whimper instead of a bang because of a double-crossing business partner. Nothing in her life has turned out the way it was supposed to, and Nada feels like a failure. Something needs to change, but the past is holding on too tightly to let her move forward. Nadas best friend Haleema is determined to pry her from her shelland what better place than at the giant annual Muslim conference held downtown, where Nada can finally meet Haleemas fianc, Zayn. And did Haleema mention Zayns brother Baz will be there? What Haleema doesnt know is that Nada and Baz have a pastsome of it good, some of it bad and all of it secret. Finished my second #auldlangspine book from @Karisimo ‘s list!

This was a delightful Muslim focused second chance romance based loosely on Austen‘s Persuasion. Jalaluddin‘s novels have been on my TBR for a long time and I‘m so happy I finally picked one up because I loved it! Nada and Baz have a long history which we find out about in bits and pieces between the present day storyline. I loved the way their big secret is slowly revealed. 👇🏻

MeganAnn I also loved how Nada‘s past is weighing down her present life choices and how when she finally manages to reconcile those past experiences, she can make better ones. It felt like such a true to life experience. I also greatly appreciated and enjoyed the insight into Muslim culture and daily life told through Nada & Baz‘s daily lives. Second chance romances when well done are one of my favorite tropes and this was beautifully executed! 5⭐️ 3mo
Karisimo So glad you liked it! I highly recommend 3mo
MeganAnn @Karisimo that one has been on my list for a long time. I always forget to check if it‘s on the shelf when I‘m at the library but I‘ll have to make a point to pick it up next time. 3mo

Ahhhh! This was so good. My favourite Uzma Jalaluddin yet. A wonderful second chance romance and a Jane Austen's Persusasion retelling set in Toronto's Muslim community. You know a romance is well done when the plotting feels tense and unpredictable even though you know the characters will end up together. The protagonists' dynamic was awesome, so much chemistry and such a unique story. Loved all the secondary characters too and hated the villain.

This book is so good!! And I'm only half way through, so I've got lots more to savour. Uzma Jalaluddin is so good at creating flawed and lovable characters. I was immediately on Nada's side. And she and Baz have such a history and chemistry! 🔥

I so extremely rarely like a romance story. I bailed on Beach Read, but I loved Ayesha At Last. So thought I'd give this author another chance and it was a win! I think it's because of the family and friendship drama? And the chaste nature of the romance? Maybe because it's based on a Jane Austen plot? Anyone else have a guess at why these stand out to me?

Ruthiella I wonder if it might be because the constraints of courtship within the Muslim community depicted by Jalaluddin make sense, like they do in Jane Austen. Whereas in more mainstream Canadian society, in order for the will they/won‘t they to work, unrealistic plot devices are often inserted.🤔 8mo
Karisimo @Ruthiella I had also wondered if it was something about the Muslim culture! 8mo

Jalaluddin does it again!
A great retelling of Persuasion set in the Muslim community of Toronto‘s Golden Crescent.
Nada is still trying to recover from the betrayal of having her idea for an app stolen by a family friend when her bestie persuades her to go to a conference, specifically to meet her fiancé‘s brother, Baz. The thing is, Nada has a long history with Baz. From childhood through college, their relationship has changed dramatically.

After rereading the author‘s Ayesha At Last, I was hoping the author was writing more books in the same Toronto neighborhood & especially Jane Austen retellings. This book is the latest & I missed one in between (Hana Khan Carries On) that I have on hold via Libby. While Ayesha‘s book retold Pride and Prejudice, this one is a retelling of Persuasion. I enjoyed it almost as much as the first book & was happy to catch up with characters from ⬇️

DebinHawaii …Ayesha. Nada was a great character & while I felt a bit too much time was spent at the Muslim conference, it was interesting to spend time in that world. While it doesn‘t directly follow Persuasion, many of the elements & the vibe are there & it‘s a sweet romance. Looking forward to Hana‘s story which is a nod to Shop Around the Corner & You‘ve Got Mail & will be adapted to film by Mindy Kaling which is cool! 💙 Read for the #20in4 #readathon (edited) 10mo

DebinHawaii @Ruthiella Me too! This one was a reintroduction since I read the book when it first came out, but a great reminder of how much I liked it & the inspiration to dig deeper & see what else the author had written. 🤗 10mo

#SummerSpecial

After rereading Ayesha At Last with the #PemberLittens in April I looked to see if the author had other books coming out & this one (a Persuasion retelling) was published in June. My library e-book hold just came in yesterday! 🤗 Both novels are set in the Muslim community in Toronto so perfect for todays #CanadaDay prompt.

Happy Canada Day! 🇨🇦

This is a delightful rom-com with some surprising depth. It features Muslim families and is set in Toronto. I really enjoyed the characters and the dynamics between them and their parents. It felt a little like a coming-of-age novel, as the characters figured out who they were and what they wanted and dealt with parental expectations. For anyone looking for spice, this is not the book for you...but for a fun romance...I really liked it. 4/5
