Holler, Child
Holler, Child: Stories | LaToya Watkins
4 posts | 2 read | 10 to read
An extraordinary and unforgettable short story collection about community, home, betrayal, and forgivenessfrom a writer whose spellbinding, buoyant* storytelling will break your heart as it tends to the wounds. *Texas Monthly In Holler, Childs eleven brilliant stories, LaToya Watkins presses at the bruises of guilt, love, and circumstance. Each story introduces us to a character irrevocably shaped by place and reaching toward somethinghope, reconciliation, freedom. In Cutting Horse, the appearance of a horse in a mans suburban backyard places a former horse breeder in trouble with the police. In Holler, Child, a mother is forced into an impossible position when her son gets in a kind of trouble she knows too well from the other side. And Time After shows us the unshakable bonds of family as a sister journeys to find her estranged brotherthe one who saved her many times over. Throughout Holler, Child, we see love lost and gained, and grief turned to hope. Much like LaToya Watkinss acclaimed debut novel, Perish, this collection peers deeply into lives of women and men experiencing intimate and magnificent reckoningsexploring how race, power, and inequality map on the individual, and demonstrating the mythic proportions of everyday life.

This is a terrific short story collection. Many of the stories were such a gut punch that I couldn‘t read through to the next, but had to put it down for a break before going forward. Also, many were written in AAVE, which I had to adjust to a bit, but which ultimately made the stories richer. I will be looking for more from Watkins.

NBA longlist, fiction (this collection is far better than the one that was shortlisted)

Totally worthy of being on the National Book Award longlist. These stories are the type that make you thankful for short fiction.

Two favorites. A metaphorical story about a man moving to a white area with a white wife, yet never feeling at home and yearning to be around people who understand him. A brutal story of a son born of rape who may have committed the act himself. She definitely doesn‘t shy away from hard topics.

Cinfhen Sounds tough but promising 7mo
Ruthiella Gosh no. I read her debut and it was crushingly depressing 7mo
BarbaraBB Sounds like your kind of book. I am on the fence about it. 7mo

Megabooks @Ruthiella I didn‘t read that, but yeah, she writes dark. 7mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen I enjoyed it. 👍🏻 7mo
Hooked_on_books Nice! I caved and ordered a copy, so I should have it in a week or so. I wanted print because I usually find stories work better for me that way than on audio. I‘m excited for this one! 7mo
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books same! I rarely like short stories in audio. I hope you like this as much as I did! 7mo

I‘ve been at my new job as the director of education for the Texas Library Association for 7 weeks. Last week we had our annual conference and it was amazing! This is a difficult time for librarians and event gave so many time to connect, learn and regroup. It was a special week and I‘m so thrilled to be working with this incredible organization. With so many authors and new releases, I had a few books follow me home 😍

Suet624 Oh boy. Texas, eh? My heart goes out to you. 12mo
