A novel about the extraordinary partnership between First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and civil rights activist Mary McLeod Bethunean unlikely friendship that changed the world, from the New York Times bestselling authors of the Good Morning America Book Club pick The Personal Librarian. The daughter of formerly enslaved parents, Mary McLeod Bethune refuses to back down as white supremacists attempt to thwart her work. She marches on as an activist and an educator, and as her reputation grows she becomes a celebrity, revered by titans of business and recognized by U.S. Presidents. Eleanor Roosevelt herself is awestruck and eager to make her acquaintance. Initially drawn together because of their shared belief in womens rights and the power of education, Mary and Eleanor become fast friends confiding their secrets, hopes and dreamsand holding each others hands through personal and professional strife. When Franklin Delano Roosevelt is elected president, the two women begin to collaborate more closely, particularly as Eleanor moves toward her own agenda separate from FDR, a consequence of the devastating discovery of her husbands secret love affair. Eleanor becomes a controversial First Lady for her outspokenness, particularly on civil rights. And when she receives threats because of her strong ties to Mary, it only fuels the womens desire to fight together for justice and equality. This is the story of two different, yet equally formidable, passionate, and committed women, and the way in which their singular friendship helped form the foundation for the modern civil rights movement.

This one was just Ok for me.an interesting story, but a little dry and spread over too long of a time period. There was a lot of factual information that was new to me though

Karisimo Have you read other titles by Marie Benedict? They always fall flat for me 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w

Wearing my warm cozy wrap and catching up on Heidi, which I‘m loving, and my book club book which is dragging. I did some baking today and made a carrot cake from scratch with homemade cream cheese frosting.

TheBookHippie Heidi is a hug in book form! 1mo

Definitely any favorite of the month. Gonna be a strong contender against The Last Green Valley which has been my favorite since January. #readingbracket2023

I absolutely loved this one! This is the story of the friendship between Eleanor Roosevelt and Mary McLeod Bethune and their joint fight for civil rights. Historical fiction is becoming my favorite genre. Taking fascinating events and people that actually existed and creating something more. I‘m happy to know they genuinely had a friendship and was happy to get lost in the story. This was the first book I‘ve been excited to read in months!

3.75 stars for this book club pick. I didn‘t really like the short chapters combined with jumping between the narrators and constant time skips, but I did enjoy learning about these two women.

Another book club pick! This was quite slow at the beginning but I like it. I loved the relationship between Eleanor Roosevelt and Mary McLeod Bethune and all they were able to accomplish by working together and really seeing each other. I‘m looking forward to the discussion on Saturday.

I liked the information I took from The Librarian but thought there was a disjoint in the writing team. This time around I‘m thinking these two make a very good team and hope they continue collaborating. I could feel the authors imbuing Eleanor and Mary with a 1940s version of their own conversations, but that was okay. It makes me wonder about the actual delicate 1940s friendship of these two influential women. ↓

marleed I do recommend print over audio as the prissy narration seemed overdone. 9mo
CoverToCoverGirl “Prissy” audio.. hilarious! 💙🤣 9mo
marleed @CoverToCoverGirl hahaha, I almost looked for a synonym to prissy before posting, then I googled the definition of prissy and decided that word really did express my thought! 9mo

This was between so-so and pick for me. While I learned plenty, it was written like it was trying to teach me as well. It packed much emotion, but it also had unbelievable dialogue that was the vehicle to share the info. This interrupted the flow even more than the history lessons told in this dual pov/ first person story.

Truthfully, Marie Benedict is an automatic purchase author. I love how she's teamed up with Victoria Christopher Murray to bring the African American perspective on the characters she writes about. A must read if you love historic fiction as I do! #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

A historical fiction must-read! Such a great read! And such a great female force - Eleanor Roosevelt and Mary McLeod Bethune - to write and learn about!

This book sheds some light on the extraordinary partnership/friendship between Eleanor Roosevelt and Mary McLeod Bethune and how their unlikely friendship changed the world.

This was amazing HF. I knew of Dr Bethune and Eleanor Roosevelt, but did not know about their powerful friendship. You will enjoy both Benedict‘s and Murray‘s author notes. Well done👏🏻🩵📚

Eggs Thanks 🙏🏻. Exhaustive research by the authors - interestingly Benedict is Caucasian, Murray is African American. They also wrote Personal Librarian. 10mo
