48 Clues into the Disappearance of My Sister
48 Clues into the Disappearance of My Sister | Joyce Carol Oates
5 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
From the towering imagination of Joyce Carol Oates, literary icon and author of BLONDE, now a major motion picture. When a beautiful woman mysteriously vanishes, her sister must tally up the clues to discover her fate. Marguerite has disappeared from her small town in Upstate New York. But was foul play involved? Did she merely get away for fun? Or did she finally make the decision to leave behind her claustrophobic life of limited opportunities? Her younger sister Gigi wonders if the flimsy silk Dior dress, so casually abandoned on the floor, is a clue to Marguerite's having seemingly vanished. The police examine the footprints made by her Ferragamo boots leaving the house, ending abruptly, and puzzle over how that can help lead to her. Gigi, not so pretty as her sister, slowly reveals her hatred for the perfect, much-loved, Marguerite. Bit by bit, like ripping the petals off a flower blossom, revelations about both women are uncovered. Subtly, but with the unbearable suspense at which Joyce Carol Oates excels, the fate of the missing beauty slowly comes to light In this suspenseful story about the complex relationship between two sisters. '[An] exquisite novel of suspense... This elegant, captivating tale is un-put-downable.' Publishers Weekly Reviews for Joyce Carol Oates 'A writer of extraordinary strengths.' Guardian 'Oates chillingly depicts the darkness lurking within the everyday.' Sunday Express 'Both haunting and sublime.' Literary Review 'Splendidly chilling.' Financial Times 'Visceral, psychologically involving, and socially astute.' Booklist

I decided to start painting my bulkhead like the TARDIS today while finishing the tagged book.

What a strange read. The reader sees the events from mercurial Gigi‘s perspective after the disappearance of her sister M. The disappearance gains notoriety as M is both an artiste & an heiress. It becomes clear that Gigi & M didn‘t always get along, possibly that she barely knew her sister at all as Gigi &others insert themselves into the investigation

Ruthiella That‘s so cute! 12mo

This book is partly the mystery indicated in the title, but at it‘s heart, it‘s a character study of the protagonist (not the missing sister). She‘s unusual and hard to pin down. By the end, I frankly still wasn‘t quite sure what had happened. I think my brain will probably noodle on this one for a while. I‘m not entirely sure if I liked it, but I appreciate it.

Fast shipping to my little spot in the world is unusual, so #aardvark for the win this month! I‘m delighted to see this here much sooner than I expected. #botm on the other hand…not sure when that one will decide to show up. At least one more week and I‘m guessing closer to two. 🤷🏼‍♀️

RebelReader I‘m curious about this one so I‘m looking forward to your review. 14mo

Ok, so I could be WAY off with my guess for this #Aardvark clue given the prominent author, but the clues seem to fit! Two sisters, one consistently referred to as more beautiful than the other (🪞), move home with their dad after their mom dies (👨‍👧‍👧). When the more beautiful sister vanishes, footprints are left in the snow (👣). Bit by bit, clues are revealed and turns out lil sis wasn't a fan. Did she leave on her own? Was there foul play❓

JamieArc Joyce Carol Oates is still writing??? I‘d be curious about this one. 1y
marleed Last year I read and audio‘d the tagged. I liked the story and should have stopped the audio before an interview with the author about the characters was played. I completely disagreed with her defense of the father she created. Now I don‘t think I can read this author again. Silly me! 1y
swishandflick I've actually never read one of her books I don't think so I don't have a personal opinion! I just couldn't find any other Feb/March releases that fit the clues as well as this one. But I'd also be kinda surprised if they went with such an established author. So it might be just a shot in the dark 🤔 @JamieArc @marleed 1y

vivastory @marleed I like JC Oates writings, but her opinions are a bit cringey (to say the least) (edited) 1y
vivastory @JamieArc It's wild how prolific she is. It seems like she publishes 1-2 big books per year & there's at least a couple more that get pub by smaller house/indie presses. 1y
swishandflick @vivastory well if she's known to release some with indie presses, maybe this guess isn't as far fetched as I thought😆 1y
marleed @vivastory oh I‘m glad I‘m not alone in my thoughts. In the interview she defended the fictional mother choosing her jerk of a husband over their own kids because well life was hard for the husband. The whole story is fictional with the family created in her head - I get it- but I was aghast for the fictional children now grown that I‘d loved by story‘s end. 1y
marleed @swishandflick I still own the book because I really did love reading it. But when I notice it on my shelf I‘m mad at the author all over again for not choosing who I‘d have chose. At the same time it kind of cracks me up that I was so unnerved by the post interview. 1y
