Gotham meets Strange the Dreamer in this thrilling young adult fantasy about a cowardly girl who finds herself at the center of a criminal syndicate conspiracy, in a city where crooked politicians and sinister cults reign and dreaming means waking up as your worst nightmare. Ever since her sister became a man-eating spider and slaughtered her way through town, nineteen-year-old Ness has been terrifiedterrified of some other Nightmare murdering her, and terrified of ending up like her sister. Because in Newham, the city that never sleeps, dreaming means waking up as your worst fear. Whether that means becoming a Nightmare thats monstrous only in appearance, to transforming into a twisted, unrecognizable creature that terrorizes the city, no one is safe. Ness will do anything to avoid becoming another victim, even if that means lying low among the Friends of the Restful Soul, a questionable organization that may or may not be a cult. But being a member of maybe-cult has a price. In order to prove herself, Ness cons her way into whats supposed to be a simple job for the organizationonly for it to blow up in her face. Literally. Tangled up in the aftermath of an explosive assassination, now Ness and the only other survivora Nightmare boy who Ness suspects is planning to eat hermust find their way back to Newham and uncover the sinister truth behind the attack, even as the horrors of her past loom ominously near.

Loved it so much I got book 2! Light, easy, fast paced, funny. A sarcastic vampire! No edge lord teen sniffer! Super enjoyable. A little innuendo but thats it. It was just what I needed!

This book was soooo much fun! I couldn't help but giggle at Ness and her outlook on life! This book does cover some heavy topics but in a simple way that makes it not feel too overwhelming. I loved it so much and felt like it really put a spotlight on what true nightmares are made of! Perfect read for spooky season. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

lumbricuslibri Interesting. Added to my list. (Love the nails! 💅) 7mo

A couple of past boxes that I ordered awaited me when I returned. Here are the books, plus my Fairyloot copy of City of Nightmares.

Confession: I actually hate the cover for The Whispering Dark 😅 It creeps me out 😬🌷💀

I love getting home to parcels 😁😁😁

Fast, fun YA read about a girl named Ness who lives in a town where falling asleep and dreaming means you‘ll likely wake up as the embodiment of your worst nightmare. When she and another kid are the only survivors of an explosion, they start investigating what happened, an investigation that will that will lead them to ask what is behind the nightmares. First in a series, this was plenty entertaining and not at all too scary.

It‘s 💯 a great idea to read a story about people falling asleep only to wake up as the living embodiment of their nightmares to finish off my evening, right? Here‘s hoping this YA book lives up to its premise.

I just had to pause for a moment to say how much I am loving this strange book! In a city like Gotham, every time you fall asleep, you risk becoming a nightmare. Ness fears for herself after watching her sister turn into a giant man eating spider. Full of zombies, vampires, monsters, giant cockroaches, and even pterodactyls, this world is intense!

Well, I finally got my first #fairyloot book. Its very pretty.

LibrarianRyan The cover for this is so different from the US cover. The fairy loot cover is not that different from the UK cover, but I had to check if it was the same book in the US. This is so pretty compared to the US cover. 13mo

While urban fantasy and vampires aren‘t typically my favorite things, I wholeheartedly enjoyed City of Nightmares by Rebecca Shaeffer! One aspect of the novel that I appreciated was Ness‘s character development. Ness is a coward, and she‘s not afraid to admit that. Part of what I loved about her was her authenticity. The way that Ness embraced her cowardness, but also grew as a person was realistic and added a lot of depth to her story.
