#KindredSpiritsChristmas - 12/10/22 - “The Red Room”

Dark, brooding, and very Gothic, the only connection to Christmas in this melodramatic story is that the first half takes place during a Christmas visit. There‘s so much ominous foreshadowing! And it‘s markedly different in tone from most of LMM‘s other stories. How did you feel reading this among LMM‘s cozy Christmas tales? What makes a Christmas story, anyway? #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

AnnR This was a jarring departure from L.M. Montgomery's usual writing but I thought the gothic story was well done. During the Victorian era, it was a popular tradition to tell ghost stories during Christmas, so it seems a gothic story would also fit in well during the holidays. 🙂 1y
BarbaraJean @Ann_Reads I hadn't thought about the Christmas ghost story tradition - that seems like a likely connection! 1y
rubyslippersreads I didn‘t care much for this, but it had some elements that reminded me of Emily of New Moon—family pride and secrets, along with a scary spare room. 1y
BarbaraJean @rubyslippersreads Oh, it does have a bit of an Emily feel! The scary spare room also reminded me of Jane Eyre—it‘s a red room there, too, I think. 1y
