Charlotte‘s an excellent student but her family doesn‘t have much money, so getting a babysitting job at a new house is a boon, even if it‘s right before Halloween. The kids seem to be able to navigate the house in a strange way, but that‘s just kids, right? No. No, it‘s not. And it gets brutal. I enjoyed this one but have some questions about the ending.

All credit to SGJ for a very creative book. I guess I was expecting more of a traditional slasher story. It ended up being more of a mind-bending fever dream. At times there was a bit too much going on for an audiobook as there were a few times I missed something and was like “what the hell is happening?” I enjoyed the twists at the end though, which definitely resulted in me reviewing the book more favorably than I would have otherwise. 4/5

Posting my final March reviews. This was my audiobook for work commutes & it kept me creeped out (& grossed out at times) throughout the story, especially the ending. Am I sure I know exactly what happened? No, but it was a heck of a scary ride to get there! If you don‘t like horror & scare easily, this isn‘t your book, but if you are a fan of horror movies, this is the audio version of one. Great narration & I loved strong & brave Charlotte!😱

Oooph - this audiobook had me stressed! I‘m still trying to figure out if I caught all the twists and turns. This was a fun blend of horror with a bit of fantasy. The story didn‘t go anywhere I was expecting. I eventually stopped guessing at what I thought was going to happen and just went along for the ride. I love when I come across something that feels surprising and new. I really enjoy SGJ‘s writing. The narrator did a fantastic job too!

Hello nightmare fuel… this book is a haunted house tale, a babysitter horror story, and a total mindf*ck at times, so basically is pure awesomeness. I loved the main character (SGJ just gets better and better at writing female MCs) so much, and didn‘t even mind that I was on the verge of freaking out the whole time I was listening.

Only on audio, and the narration is excellent. The acknowledgements read by the author are also great!

Everything Stephen Graham Jones touches is horror gold in my opinion. This was conceptually bizarre, very creepy and surreal, and I loved the way the power balance between the Native babysitter and the white family was written, adding to the horror plot perfectly and making everything feel very ominous and oppressive in the house. I‘ll just eat up everything this man writes.
