"Gayl Jones's work represents a watershed in American literature.--Imani Perry Legendary writer Gayl Jones returns with a stunning new novel about Black American artists in exile Gayl Jones, the novelist Toni Morrison discovered decades ago and Tayari Jones recently called her favorite writer, has been described as one of the great literary writers of the 20th century. Now, for the first time in over 20 years, Jones is publishing again. In the wake of her long-awaited fifth novel, Palmares, The Birdcatcher is another singular achievement, a return to the circles of her National Book Award finalist, The Healing. Set primarily on the island of Ibiza, the story is narrated by the writer Amanda Wordlaw, whose closest friend, a gifted sculptor named Catherine Shuger, is repeatedly institutionalized for trying to kill a husband who never leaves her. The three form a quirky triangle on the white-washed island. A study in Black women's creative expression, and the intensity of their relationships, this work from Jones shows off her range and insight into the vicissitudes of all human nature - rewarding longtime fans and bringing her talent to a new generation of readers.

Pickpick

I really liked this. You can see and hear the Toni Morrison inspiration, but it is also uniquely not Morrison a bit more clipped, the characters not as deep, but in a good way.
The story itself is fascinating, told mostly through the POV of the couple's friend who goes to stay with them time after time while the wife keeps trying to kill the husband.
Interesting and engrossing read.

batsy Nice review! I really want to read this. Jones is an author I've been meaning to read for so long. 13mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @batsy the reviews on GR are pretty split. People seem upset that they don't understand or get a super deep meaning from it. But I really appreciated that it was a bit weird, but there is still a story and fantastic writing there. I might have felt different if I hadn't read a couple of books that I just didn't jive with. 13mo

Mehso-so

I put this audiobook on hold at my library when the #toblonglist came out and probably should have read the Litsy reviews first. I like the writing but nothing else came together for me- the plot, the characters. Gayl Jones is an author I have been told I must try again, and so I will, but this book did not work for me.

This was an ok story about a lady that is institutionalized after trying to kill her husband for not leaving her.

Bailedbailed

Life has been a struggle this week! I‘ve had a multi day allergic reaction, so here are some bails/hibernations.

House is too complicated for me to follow now, and Minder got some allergens trapped in it that are not helping my situation, so I‘m hibernating both.

The Birdcatcher is a true bail and truly awful book. I will NOT be returning to it. Not worthy of the NBA shortlist!

I can‘t deal with Fanone‘s voice and violence rn. May come back. 🤔

Librariana I'm glad you're being gentle with yourself... kind to how you're feeling and not pushing yourself to complete a read. I'm just sorry one of them might be exacerbating your symptoms! 1y
BarbaraBB hope you feel better soon. Allergies can be the worst. Surprised about the Birdwatcher. I won‘t read it though! 1y

Hooked_on_books Allergies suck! Hopefully they calm down soon. I‘m not surprised by your reaction to the tagged. I‘m bewildered that it made the NBA long list and flabbergasted that it‘s on the short list. Watch, it‘ll win! 🙄 1y
Centique Best wishes for your allergies to calm down/allergens to go away. I know it can be so miserable. I hope you‘re making progress and it‘s not interfering with other medications etc. 💕💕 1y

I am perplexed by this book‘s inclusion on the NBA fiction long list. It‘s…not good. It feels like an only partially realized examination of mental illness that ends up making that character simply look juvenile and obnoxious rather than imparting empathy. And there‘s no smooth narrative. I hope it‘s simply on the list to pay homage to her past work (which I have not read, but which is respected by many), though I don‘t think that‘s a good reason.

BarbaraBB So far I liked the longlisted books but I‘ll stay away from this one! 2y
Megabooks Interesting. I have this coming up and will keep your review in mind. 2y
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB @Megabooks It just made the shortlist! I have no idea why, but they obviously really like this one. Maybe I‘m missing something. I‘ll be interested to see what you both think if you end up reading it. 2y
Megabooks My favorite that I‘ve read so far from the longlist didn‘t make it. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ @BarbaraBB (edited) 2y
BarbaraBB My favorite so far is The Rabbit Hutch, I‘m glad it has made it to the finals. I will be reading All This Could be Differerent and Scattered All over the Earth (books in translation), the others I don‘t care for much. I do have a lot more from the longlist to read though! @Megabooks (edited) 2y

Gayl Jones has some amazing writing in this story. The flow of her words created an atmosphere that was transportive. Unfortunately though, the story just wasn't for me. The entangled relationships between the three friends that created a strange love triangle left me irritated, confused, and just uninterested.

I do plan on searching out other books by this author though since some of the writing was so good.
