Koshersoul: The Faith and Food Journey of an African American Jew | Michael W. Twitty
5 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
The James Beard award-winning author of the acclaimed The Cooking Gene explores the cultural crossroads of Jewish and African diaspora cuisine and issues of memory, identity, and food. In Koshersoul, Michael W. Twitty considers the marriage of two of the most distinctive culinary cultures in the world today: the foods and traditions of the African Atlantic and the global Jewish diaspora. To Twitty, the creation of African-Jewish cooking is a conversation of migrations and a dialogue of diasporas offering a rich background for inventive recipes and the people who create them. The question that most intrigues him is not just who makes the food, but how the food makes the people. Jews of Color are not outliers, Twitty contends, but significant and meaningful cultural creators in both Black and Jewish civilizations. Koshersoul also explores how food has shaped the journeys of numerous cooks, including Twitty's own passage to and within Judaism. As intimate, thought-provoking, and profound as The Cooking Gene, this remarkable book teases the senses as it offers sustenance for the soul. Koshersoul includes 48-50 recipes.

Nonfiction time. Poor Casey‘s got a bad stomach today, so he was happy to curl up close beside me while I read another chunk of this excellent book on faith and food.

Soubhiville Poor buddy. Hope he feels better soon. 1y

I am totally blown away by this book in which the author, a culinary historian and a Jew, talks about the intersection of Black and Jewish cultures. Just fascinating!

SqueakyChu I can‘t wait to try some of the recipes at the end of this book, although this is not a cookbook per se. (edited) 1y

Two years ago my bookclub read The Cooking Gene and we had the BEST discussion where we also spoke about the similarities between the black community and Jewish community. So I‘m SO HAPPY that Michael took the time to write this book. Im excited to hear what he has to say. He‘s a brilliant creative mind.

Megabooks I hope you love it! 2y
Cinfhen He‘s such a brilliant guy but im not sure I love his writing style- it‘s hard to follow his train of thought. I had similar problems with his first book - he needs to self edit 😜 I have a feeling im soon gonna find myself skipping ahead @Megabooks (edited) 2y

This one was fascinating. While I missed out of the first in his trilogy about the food that made him, The Cooking Gene, I was so glad to jump in with this one! Twitty, who is Black, Jewish, and gay, looks at the intersection of soul food and kosher food, which I didn‘t know was a thing. Part memoir, he shares his journey in Judaism and how his other intersectional identities affected it, but I enjoyed most learning about the food. Caveat ⬇️

Megabooks ⬆️ at times reading the #audiobook, it was hard to follow all the Hebrew and Yiddish words. It may have been easier to follow the print book as a non-Jew, but I did enjoy it and his narration. (edited) 2y
Cinfhen SUPER curious about this one!!! 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m dying to hear about southern kosher meals when you and N&A find them!! 2y
