The Winter Sun
The Winter Sun: Notes on a Vocation | Fanny Howe
2 posts | 3 read
Beautiful essays by Fanny Howe, a poet praised for her private quest through the metaphysical universe . . . the results are startling and honest (The New York Times Book Review) Fanny Howes richly contemplative The Winter Sun is a collection of essays on childhood, language, and meaning by one of Americas most original contemporary poets. Through a collage of reflections on people, places, and times that have been part of her life, Howe shows the origins and requirements of a vocation that has no name. She finds proof of this in the lives of othersJacques Lusseyran, who, though blind, wrote about his inner vision, surviving inside a concentration camp during World War II; the Scottish nun Sara Grant and Abb Dubois, both of whom lived extensively in India where their vocation led them; the English novelists Antonia White and Emily Bront; and the fifth-century philosopher and poet Bharthari. With interludes referring to her own place and situation, Howe makes this book into a Progress rather than a memoir. The Winter Sun displays the same power as found in her highly praised collection of essays, The Wedding Dress, a book described by James Carroll as an unflinching but exhilarating look at real religion, the American desolation, a womans life, and, always, the redemption of literature.

May's miserable weather 🌧️ 🌧️ meant a banging month for reading! I managed to read 10 books & these are my favourites.
Catherine Lacey's Nobody is Ever Missing blew me away. Jon Krakauer can write about things I don't care about (mountaineering) and I am GRIPPED!
Fanny Howe's memoir/philosophical treatise left me thinking.
Sour Cherry is a Bluebeard origin story.
South Riding is a 1930s Middle March
Open, Heaven ripped my heart open.

merelybookish My biggest disappointment was 2w
merelybookish I managed to complete 3 prompts for #192025 and read 3 books off my shelf, one that I've had since 2018. 2w
Ruthiella Nice wrap up! Is Sarah Burton Dorothea Brooke? 🤔 2w
merelybookish @Ruthiella Thanks! Good question!! Arguably. She does kind of dedicate herself to the greater good. FWIW, I don't think South Riding quite as good as Middlemarch but the scope felt the same. 2w
sarahbarnes Sounds like some great reading! I‘m stacking Sour Cherry and I loved Lacey‘s other books once read so adding this one to my list now as well! 📚 2w
