She Weeps Each Time You're Born
She Weeps Each Time You're Born: A Novel | Quan Barry
9 posts | 5 read | 10 to read
Quan Barrys luminous fiction debut brings us the tumultuous history of modern Vietnam as experienced by a young girl born under mysterious circumstances a few years before the countrys reunification, a child gifted with the otherworldly ability to hear the voices of the dead. At the peak of the war in Vietnam, a baby girl is born along the Song Ma River on the night of the full moon. This is Rabbit, who will journey away from her destroyed village with a makeshift family thrown together by war. Here is a Vietnam weve never encountered before: through Rabbits inexplicable but radiant intuition, we are privy to an intimate version of history, from the days of French Indochina and the World War II rubber plantations through the chaos of postwar reunification. With its use of magical realismRabbits ability to hear the deadthe novel reconstructs a turbulent historical period through a painterly human lens. This is the moving story of one womans struggle to unearth the true history of Vietnam while simultaneously carving out a place for herself within it.From the Hardcover edition.

Mostly pretty good with some poetic writing, but it jumps around in time which is just a little confusing. Does make you appreciate the suffering of the Vietnamese in the War and before and after. Still worthwhile but not for teens, kind of an R rating if it was a movie. I liked the boat people section the best.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I picked this up at an indie because I loved Barry‘s recent book We Ride Upon Sticks. This was entirely different - set in Vietnam over a few decades, starting with the 1970s. The writing is beautiful and had touches of magical realism. Between my lack of knowledge about Vietnam and the way parts were written, I did feel at times I didn‘t have enough context. Though I still liked We Ride Upon Sticks more, I felt this was worth the read.

Centique I loved We Ride Upon Sticks so I must try this. 3y
Lauren890 @Centique I loved that book too! This one was VERY different and a little slow, but I love her writing. 3y
