Cults
Cults: Inside the World's Most Notorious Groups and Understanding the People Who Joined Them | Max Cutler
14 posts | 11 read | 11 to read
Mystery. Manipulation. Murder. Cults are associated with all of these. But what really goes on inside them? More specifically, what goes on inside the minds of cult leaders and the people who join them? Based on the hit podcast Cults, this is essential reading for any true crime fan. Cults prey on the very attributes that make us human: our desire to belong; to find a deeper meaning in life; to live everyday with divine purpose. Their existence creates a sense that any one of us, at any time, could step off the cliffs edge and fall into that daunting abyss of manipulation and unhinged dedication to a misplaced cause. Perhaps its this mindset that keeps us so utterly obsessed and desperate to learn more, or its that the stories are so bizarre and unsettling that we are simply in awe of the mechanics that make these infamous groups tick. The premier storytelling podcast studio Parcast has been focusing on unearthing these mechanicsthe cult leaders and followers, and the world and culture that gave birth to both. Parcasts work in analyzing dozens of case studies has revealed patterns: distinct ways that cult leaders from different generations resemble one another. What links the ten notorious figures profiled in Cults are as disturbing as they are stunningfrom Manson to Applewhite, Koresh to Ral, the stories woven here are both spellbinding and disturbing. Cults is more than just a compilation of grisly biographies, however. In these pages, Parcasts founder Max Cutler and national bestselling author Kevin Conley look closely at the lives of some of the most disreputable cult figures and tell the stories of their rise to power and fall from grace, sanity, and decency. Beyond that, it is a study of humanity, an unflinching look at what happens when the most vulnerable recesses of the mind are manipulated and how the things we hold most sacred can be twisted into the lowest form of malevolence.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘ve read fairly extensively about many infamous cults, so expectations were low for this collection. What else is there to know? But I was thoroughly impressed by how Cutler and Conley brought these 10 groups together, analyzing the leaders, followers, and drawing parallels. A bit more than an overview of each. Well-researched and engaging. I‘ve not listened to the “Cults” podcast yet, but I will.

Megabooks I enjoyed this too 👍🏻👍🏻 6mo

Here's the April pick for the #truecrimebookclub . I'm pretty fascinated by cults, so this book looks very interesting. Anyone else joining in for this one?? What book club picks have you read this month? anything you're really looking forward to for next month?

@AlwaysBeenALoverOfBooks - This one gives kind a little overview on a few different ones. Doesn't really do a “deep dive“ into any one in particular. But I did learn more about David Koresh than I had known beforehand.

Got my undercoating for my car (so more reading time and goldfish!). One of the workers was so interested in what I was reading, and we had such a lovely conversation about all sorts of cults!

Getting my snow tires on —- and reading :) Love this little bug ;)

#CrimeADay

Beatlefan129 At first, I read your caption and looked at the picture and thought, “Hmm, that little Beetle needs snow tires?!” 😜 1y
ElizaMarie @Beatlefan129 Haha, that would be adorable to take in your little toy car to get the tires switched out. I mean... maybe the ultra-rich do that? Hmm... But no... this was just cute little eye candy while I was waiting for my normal-sized beetle to get its tires :) 1y

So, I have this “thing“ about cults. I am terrified of them, but it's like the “crash you can't look away“ for me. I love to read/watch/listen to anything cult related! (Knowledge is Power?) Anyway, starting this during the FIFA matches (that I have been so into!) #CrimeADay

Chelsea.Poole Oh me too! I‘m LOVING the World Cup! 🏟️ 1y

I'm giving this one a pick because for the most part it was an informative read about cults, and there were several cults discussed in this book that I hadn't previously heard of.

The authors though sometimes put too much of their own thoughts into the read, without sound facts. I don't mind a little of that, but I think they were trying to make a statement concerning the different leaders that was just speculation.

While I 💜 informative books on subjects I enjoy, I‘m not a fan of speculation (just the facts ma‘am), so this was a low pick.

The authors adapted their podcast about cults into a book that covered well known ones (Heavens Gate, NXIVM) and lesser known ones (Narcosatanists, Ant Hill Kids). They managed to share broad strokes and some interesting details, but I did NOT like that they tried to retroactively diagnose mental issues in the leaders. ⬇️

Megabooks Funny story time: I was listening to the particularly sadistic, gory chapter about the Ant Hill Kids while taking the trash down our driveway to the street at night. Suddenly, a probably normal dude comes out of nowhere on a bike, and I book it running up the driveway. I‘m sure he thought I was NUTS!! 🤣🤣🤣 (edited) 2y
squirrelbrain LOL! You thought he was nuts, he thought you were really nuts! 2y
vivastory I had to Google Ant Hill Kids. Pretty frightening. 😬 2y

Megabooks @squirrelbrain I know he thought that! I even looked behind myself! 🤣🤣 2y
Ruthiella He probably just thought you forgot your recycling and needed to get it real quick! 😂 2y
Megabooks @Ruthiella we‘ll go with that!! 🤣👍🏻 2y
Cinfhen 😅😂😅😂 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen dude, it was a scary cult!! 😂😂🤣🤣 2y
Centique Ok just went down the Ant Hill rabbit hole. Good god that is frightening. And people stayed loyal to him 🤯🤯🤯 2y
Megabooks @Centique that is truly some of the most terrifying cult stuff I have ever read. I just can‘t imagine having to live though what those people did!! 2y

#NewReleaseTuesday problems! 🤔🤔 I‘m thinking Cults and Pretty Baby or Normal Family. This is what I get for reading my own books this week. 🤣🤣

EvieBee I think your parents need library cards! Then you wouldn‘t have to pick! LOL 🤣🤣 (edited) 2y
Megabooks @EvieBee lol they already have them! Mom uses hers, but this is left over from a town I used to live in where my card hasn‘t expired yet. They never lived there so couldn‘t get a card. 2y
Cinfhen Whoa!!!! Soooo many options!!! I don‘t think I‘m familiar with any of these new releases 2y

Chelsea.Poole I‘m excited for Normal Family. Several others I don‘t know on your list though! 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I wasn‘t either, but you know my library always picks interesting ones! 2y
Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole I ended up checking that out as well, but I‘m reading Cults first. 👍🏻 2y

I had hoped to learn more about how people end up following these crazy people, but the book was more a short biography of each of the leaders, in addition to the stories of their respective cults and what happened – how they formed, the people that followed them, and how they combusted. Similar to a book of short stories, I found some more interesting than others.

Thanks to Edelweiss for an advance digital copy. This book accomplishes the first part of the subtitle‘s promise and fails miserably at “understanding the people who join them”. This was way to much time spent with gross people. Scheduled release: July 12
