Gay Neck: The Story of a Pigeon
Gay Neck: The Story of a Pigeon | Dhan Gopal Mukerji
4 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
Gay-Neck: the Story of a Pigeon won the Newbery Medal for excellence in American children's literature in 1928. It deals with the life of Gay-Neck, a prized Indian pigeon. Mukerji wrote that "the message implicit in the book is that man and winged animals are brothers." He stated that much of the book is based on his boyhood experiences with a flock of forty pigeons and their leader, as the boy in the book is Mukerji himself. The book offers an insight into the life of a boy of high caste and also into the training of pigeons. Several chapters are told from Gay-Neck's perspective, with the pigeon speaking in first person.

#BookReport
Late post because the holiday weekend here has thrown off my concept of time. I managed my goal of finishing Those Who Hunt with the bonus of finishing the tagged.

#WeeklyForecast
My goal this week is to finally get some progress into Watership Down. Idk why I‘ve been having such a mental block with it.

This felt very much slice of life and not a great adventure story. There is a lot to unpack about man‘s relation to the natural world as well as with each other. This alludes to the First World War but doesn‘t go too deep other than just a phase of life.

Story about a carrier pigeon being raised by a boy in India. Heroic feats. An amazing war record. A hero among birds. Well-told. Interesting to hear about India before, during, and after WWI. Plus the pigeon speaks!

This would be very slow for today's youth. #NewberyChallenge

kspenmoll Beautiful cover; interesting story. 6y
youngreadrshelf @kspenmoll it was interesting, but I kept thinking about the books that my students seem to gravitate towards and I don‘t think this would one of them. A shame. 6y
kspenmoll I so get it. And we want them to read. 6y

youngreadrshelf @kspenmoll yes, we do. Although, I‘ve got 2 or 3 I could recommend it to and I think they‘d enjoy it. 6y
Peddler410 I have an English teacher who does a Newbery book project every year. She makes them choose books from before they were born and most of the time the kids find some good out of the older choices. 6y
youngreadrshelf @Peddler410 that would be interesting. I wonder what mine would chose. 6y
