Blood Orange Night: My Journey to the Edge of Madness | Melissa Bond
3 posts | 2 read | 8 to read
Brain on Fire meets High Achiever in this visceral, propulsive memoir detailing a womans accidental descent into prescription benzodiazepine dependence and the life-threatening impacts of the drugs long-term use. As Melissa Bond raises her infant daughter and a special-needs one-year-old son, she suffers from unbearable insomnia, sleeping an hour or less each night. She loses her job as a journalist (a casualty of the 2008 recession), and her relationship with her husband grows distant. Her doctor casually prescribes benzodiazepinesa family of drugs that includes Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, Ativanand increases her dosage on a regular basis. Following her doctors orders, Melissa takes the pills night after night; her body begins to shut down and she collapses while holding her infant daughter. Only then does Melissa learn that her doctorlike many doctorshas over-prescribed the medication and quitting cold turkey could lead to psychosis or fatal seizures. Benzodiazepine addiction is not well studied, and few experts know how to help Melissa as she begins the months-long process of tapering off the pills without suffering debilitating, potentially deadly consequences. Each page thrums with the heartbeat of Melissas strugglehow many hours has she slept? How many weeks old are her babies? How many milligrams has she taken? Her propulsive writing crescendos to a fever pitch as she fights for her health and her ability to care for her children. Lyrical and immersive, Blood Orange Night shines a light on the prescription benzodiazepine epidemic as it reaches a crisis point in this country.

Im not sure how I got to finding this book but WOW! This was a stunningly beautiful account of a young mother falling into an unseen drug addiction due to insomnia, anxiety and depression after having 2 children within 18 months of each other. There are some really difficult moments so if you‘re struggling with any of the above tread lightly. Five stars and audio read by author is perfect.

Well, Goodreads deleted my account with no warning (eleven years of curating my list and reviews down the drain, thanks so much), so I‘m going to be much more active here on Litsy! I picked this up a couple of weeks ago and have finally started it — as someone who had one single bad experience with Ativan, I‘m reading this with abject terror and a lot of “what ifs.” Melissa Bond is an incredible person. #bloodorangenight #melissabond

LiteraryinLawrence Oh no! That‘s so frustrating! 2y
actualdisneyprincess @LiteraryinLawrence it really is. I thought it was just a glitch, but nope — typing in my URL just yields a “page doesn‘t exist” page. I sent an email, no answer yet. Oh well - the community here is so much warmer! 💖 2y

Can you imagine being prescribed a drug by your doctor and later finding it was slowly dismantling your life? In an age where stress, anxiety, insomnia and depression are among the leading illnesses, many people (myself included) have at some time been prescribed a benzodiazepine. Melissa Bond, a narrative journalist and new mom, narrates her journey into “accidental addiction” and back. As important a read as EMPIRE OF PAIN.
