The Imagination Chamber | Philip Pullman
5 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
Master storyteller Philip Pullman returns to the world of Lyra and Will, Mrs Coulter and Lee Scoresby, Pantalaimon and Iorek Byrnison, in this must-have companion to the His Dark Materials trilogy. A book of stunning, moving, exhilarating, breathtaking scenes set during the events of Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass and The Book of Dust: from Serafina Pekkala sitting quietly on her cloud pine broom, listening to Dust, ahead of the epic battle with the Angels, to a young Lyra speculating about her mother's identity. In exquisite prose, Philip Pullman cuts new windows into his worlds for the reader to step through and reveals new truths about many of the iconic characters from Lyra's universe. ... This His Dark Materials trilogy is a major, critically acclaimed HBO/BBC TV series starring Ruth Wilson, James McAvoy, Dafne Keen, Lin-Manuel Miranda. The perfect gift for every fan, of any age. His Dark Materials is one of the most popular and successful children's series of all time. First published in 1995, and acclaimed as a modern masterpiece, it won the UK's top awards for children's literature "Remarkable writing: courageous and dangerous as the best art should be" (The Times) "Rarely, if ever, have readers been offered such a casket of wonders" (Independent)

Mehso-so

It really is just a collection of small excerpts wrapped up as a collection of ‘Cosmic Rays‘ or ‘Imaginations‘ from the author‘s mind.

I guess for me, as a hardcore HDM fan, it reintroduced old friends. It was nice trying to figure out which book they would have come from and where they fit into the storyline. Or even if the author wrote them just for this book. It was a nice half an hour while I sat with a coffee. Nothing more. Nothing less.

This is a PSA - do not buy this book - it is the biggest rip off and an insult to HDM fans. It is basically random paragraphs or sentence (one per one-sided page) - I can only assume cut from drafts of the series - cobbled together and pitched as 'cosmic rays'. It's a joke and a publisher's money-making exercise. I only didn't return it because it's signed. Disappointing that Pullman signed off on this.

Cathythoughts Oh dear ! Great title though. 2y

Picked up my book today @TrishB - having a flick through and read a few pages, it's not quite what I was expecting... Have you read yet?

persephone1408 I only read the 3 golden compass books. What exactly is that?? I see it says Lyra on it. 2y

TrishB No- I flicked through and it looked like poems? 2y
Oryx @TrishB @persephone1408 It looks like random snippets of text set in those worlds from various times. It's a bit odd. I was expecting some story. It's still a beautiful object, but I'm not convinced. It feels like bits that were cut from the books. Feels like an easy money project. 😐 2y
TrishB That‘s a shame! Not like we‘re not waiting for another book. 2y
