The Town of Babylon
The Town of Babylon: A Novel | Alejandro Varela
7 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
"The Town of Babylon is funny and sexy as well as thoughtful, even heartbreaking. Its an incisive taxonomy of the American suburb, looking beyond the white picket fence to tell a different storywhat it is to be queer, the child of immigrants, and a person of color in this country." Rumaan Alam, author of Leave the World Behind A debut novel about domestic malaise and suburban decline, following Andrs, a gay Latinx professor, returning to his hometown for a twenty-year high school reunion. When his father falls ill, Andrs, a professor of public health, returns to his suburban hometown to tend to his father's recovery. Reevaluating his rocky marriage in the wake of his husbands infidelity and with little else to do, he decides to attend his twenty-year high school reunion, where he runs into the long-lost characters of his youth. Jeremy, his first love, is now married with two children after having been incarcerated and recovering from addiction. Paul, who Andrs has long suspected of having killed a man in a homophobic attack, is now an Evangelical minister and father of five. And Simone, Andrs's best friend, is in a psychiatric institution following a diagnosis of schizophrenia. During this short stay, Andrs confronts these relationships, the death of his brother, and the many sacrifices his parents made to offer him a better life. A novel about the essential nature of community in maintaining ones own health, The Town of Babylon is an intimate portrait of queer, racial, and class identity, a call to reevaluate the ties of societal bonds and the systems in which they are forged.

I usually don't enjoy books when I don't like the main character, but Andres is the exception. I especially enjoyed the quality of the writing with the extensive vocabulary of the author. At times it seemed as if Verela was trying to address too much - racism, immigration, homophobia, infidelity, mental illness, but in the end it worked for me.

Reggie So I went into this thinking this was about him and his husband and almost nothing was about that. 5mo

Varela paints a portrait of a community, with a Latinx family with immigrant parents at the center. We see how despite the fact that we‘re not so different from one another, opportunities and prejudices have a major impact in what happens for each of us. The main character has a major chip on his shoulder and the story shows us why. I think this is a worthy contender for the National Book Award.

Megabooks Glad you liked this more than I did! 1y
Hooked_on_books @Megabooks I was kinda expecting to hate it, so this was a nice surprise. I wonder a bit how the audio is read. Because if the book is read with a certain tone of voice, your reaction totally makes sense to me. And it‘s sad that the audio would be done so poorly, if that‘s the case. It makes me wonder how you would have responded to the print. 1y

Imagine the most sanctimonious, woke guy comes back to your 20th high school reunion, and you get to be in his head for 11 hours while he wonders what is the most politically correct thing to do while spouting public health facts.

Well, that is this book, and it sucked. 👎🏻🤦🏻‍♀️

8little_paws I had really hoped to like this one too and it fell pretty flat 2y
Hooked_on_books Oh dear! 😂 Now I can‘t wait to see how I‘ll react! What an interesting grouping they‘ve come up with this year, eh? 2y
BarbaraBB Love your review. I won‘t bother with the book! 2y

MicheleinPhilly Oh no! I just bought this. 😕 At least it was on sale. 2y
Soubhiville I couldn‘t make myself finish it. 2y
Megabooks @8little_paws @Soubhiville so glad it wasn‘t just me. This really didn‘t work for me at all! 2y
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books it really is! A lot of debuts. I was glad to see so many short story collections on the longlist, but I‘m sorry only one made it to the final. Although I‘m with you in thinking it was excellent! 2y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB please don‘t. Not worth it! 2y
Megabooks @MicheleinPhilly I think I got the audiobook for $5 during the sitewide sale. I‘m just glad I didn‘t pay full price. Although I probably would‘ve bailed after a few hours if I didn‘t own it. I kept waiting for him to be less annoying. Yeah… 🫤 (edited) 2y
Hooked_on_books I‘ve now read the other shortlisted four and Hajji Hotak is my clear favorite. Watch, they‘ll pick the Jones, which I thought was awful! 2y
Reggie Lolol I totally understand this review. 2y

Megabooks @sarahbarnes I can‘t believe it finished it! 2y
Megabooks @Reggie and I get what you were getting at in yours. I feel like if he hadn‘t dithered so much, I would‘ve liked it more, but I found it pretty tedious being in his head. The chapters about the neighborhood were better, but not enough to save it for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books really excited to see what you think. The Birdcatcher is up later this week for me, and I‘m super curious whether I‘ll like it after your review. 😬😬 2y

I didn‘t finish this, but I might come back to it at some point.

The first half is slow moving, about Andrès who returns to his parent‘s home in his late 30‘s because his dad‘s health is declining. Andrès‘ marriage seems to be on the rocks, we don‘t know why only that his husband is in Nairobi for business.

At 2/3 there are a couple chapters focused on other families in the community, and at that point I lost interest. Maybe I‘ll finish ?‍♀️?

My dad takes a small packet of salt from his pocket. “Here,” he says. “In case of an emergency.”

The first time I saw my father after coming out, he gave me a five-pound wholesale bag of restaurant salt packets. “You can throw this in their eyes and run,” he said. “Always run, mi‘jo. Always.”

I feel like I got baited by the promise of a gay relationship in this book. To be fair, I got one but it was not the one I was expecting. Andres, a population studies professor, goes back to his suburban hometown to take care of his aging parents while he thinks about his husband‘s infidelities. It so happens to coincide with a 20th year reunion. This book was all over the place in a very good bookclubby way. Andres, while telling you the 👇🏼

Reggie the events of the present and past, is also showing you the sociological scaffolding that holds up peoples current predicaments. So much so that I got annoyed and wanted to add that people can just be dicks. And then a character comes around and says the same thing so the author has a bit of self-awareness. Lol anyways a pick. 2y
Centique This sounds good Reggie. How‘s everything going? We‘ve had rain and flooding here (not near me though) and looks like New Mexico has too. Hope it‘s not near you 💕 2y
Reggie @Centique Hi Paula! This was good. There is an absolutely heartbreaking chapter on this Black couple who live in a predominantly white area and the struggle the mother feels to make sure her daughter doesn‘t lose her identity. Nope, no floods up here in the North. But we need the rain. The whole West needs the moisture. How are the kiddos? 2y

Centique @Reggie kiddos are doing good. The older one getting ready to apply for university (going to the local one next year so she can live at home) and the younger one gaining back some confidence after all the time at home last year with lockdowns and no school. How are your fam? 2y
Reggie @Centique they‘re doing ok. Part of why I took a break from here was because there was a weekend where both of my parents ended up in the emergency for different reasons. My dad had surgery on his prostate about a month ago and my moms kidneys were at 5% and she got put on dialysis. But there was a bunch of stuff leading up to those things. They‘re both in great shape now. Other than that, everyone else is ok. 2y
Centique @Reggie I‘m so sorry to hear that they‘ve had such tough health problems 😣 So worrying and stressful for all of you. I hope they‘re both improving ❤️💙💜 2y
DivineDiana Just catching up on posts. Glad to read that your parents are doing well and that the worry is behind you. ❤️ 2y
Reggie @DivineDiana Thank you, Diana! ❤️ 2y
Rissreads I‘m catching up too and glad your parents are over the worst. I‘m struggling with my parents at the moment. My Dad has lung cancer that‘s spread and my mum has alzheimers. But I‘m lucky to still have them around! Take care of yourself too x 1y
Reggie @Rissreads I‘m sorry to hear this about your parents, Rissa. That has got to be rough. Mine are doing a lot better right now. I hope yours get as comfortable as possible. 1y
