6 posts | 8 read | 4 to read
One woman takes the vacation of a lifetime in this poignant and heartwarming story about the threads that hold a family together from #1 New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery. Single mom Robyn Caldwell needs a new plan for her future. She has always put her family first. Now, with her kids grown, she yearns for a change. But what can she do when her daughter has become the most demanding bride ever, her son wont even consider college, her best friend is on the brink of marital disaster and her ex is making a monumentally bad decision that could ruin everything? Take a vacation, of course. Press reset. When her great-aunt Lillian invites her to Santa Barbara for the summer, Robyn hops on the first plane to sunny California. But its hard to get away when youre the heart of the family. One by one, everyone she loves follows her across the country. Somehow, their baggage doesnt feel as heavy in the sun-drenched, mishmash mansion. The more time Robyn spends with free-spirited Lillian, the more possibilities she seesfor dreams, love, family. She can have everything she ever wanted, if only she can muster the courage to take a chance on herself.

The Summer Getaway was wild with drama. I have come to like Mallery‘s womens fiction books, but this one had me saying wtf quite a bit. So much immaturity, the main character had issues (expected), the daughter had problems (which took an unexpected wild turn at the very end). The ex husband is a jackass, the bff is too whiny, etc. With that said it was well written and easy to read due to the high level of drama.

Normally I love Susan Mallery‘s books, but this one just didn‘t excite me. It‘s a good beach read as it is light reading. I thought the mother-daughter conflict portrayed between Robyn and Harlow was realistic. Lillian‘s house itself is a “character” in the story. Envision the Winchester mansion outside San Jose, California. Eccentric!

I enjoy Susan Mallery's books for beach & pool reads as they‘re easy to pick up, put down & get swept away to a vacation escape in between. Robyn is a likeable character, as are many of the supporting characters. I wanted to explore her Aunt's historic Santa Barbara house & all its treasures (I also want to know where I can get a relative to leave me a mansion &:or its contents-I promise to take the 15 cats with it!) ;-) An engaging soapy drama⬇️

DebinHawaii … read for an excerpt book tour review. My full review & Three Herb Salsa and Braised Little Gems recipe that fits the vibe are on my post here: http://kahakaikitchen.blogspot.com/2022/02/the-book-tour-stops-here-excerpt-and.... 2y
