Birds of California
Birds of California | Katie Cotugno
9 posts | 11 read | 14 to read
Sparks fly and things get real in this sharply sexy and whip-smart romantic comedy set against the backdrop of a post #metoo Hollywood from New York Times bestselling author Katie Cotugno--page-turning escapist fun in the spirit of Beach Read, The Kiss Quotient, and Red, White and Royal Blue. Former child actor Fiona St. James dropped out of the spotlight after a spectacularly public crash and burn. The tabloids called her crazy and self-destructive and said she'd lost her mind. Now in her late twenties, Fiona believes her humiliating past is firmly behind her. She's finally regained a modicum of privacy, and she won't let anything--or anyone--mess it up. Unlike Fiona, Sam Fox, who played her older brother on the popular television show Birds of California, loves the perks that come with being a successful Hollywood actor: fame, women, parties, money. When his current show gets cancelled and his agent starts to avoid his calls, the desperate actor enthusiastically signs on for a Birds of California revival. But to make it happen, he needs Fiona St. James. Against her better judgment, Fiona agrees to have lunch with Sam. What happens next takes them both by surprise. Sam is enthralled by Fiona's take-no-prisoners attitude, and Fiona discovers a lovable goofball behind Sam's close-up-ready face. Long drives to the beach, late nights at dive bars . . . theirs is the kind of kitschy romance Hollywood sells. But just like in the rom-coms Fiona despises, there's a twist that threatens her new love. Sam doesn't know the full story behind her breakdown. What happens when she reveals the truth?

Fiona, 28 was once a network superstar on a family sitcom when she was a young child actor. But her offscreen antics caused her shining star to implode, leaving her off the A list and hiding from public view. Now the network wants her to join the reboot but Fiona has no desire to return to the nest. Audio narration was FANTASTIC & the story was FABULOUS! LOVED THIS ONE 🥰

Megabooks Interesting!! Sounds a lot like this, which I enjoyed 2y
Megabooks But in the comeback it was other people‘s issues not hers, which I guess makes it a different book. 🤔 2y

Cinfhen Parts feel like the factionalized story of Nickelodeon celebrity Jennette McCurdy‘s memoir @Megabooks 2y

LOVING this audio 🎧♥️ A recent #AudibleDeal that I picked up!!! Young woman Fiona was once a teen star on a family sitcom until she had a very public breakdown and her shining star combusted 💥Now the network wants a reboot but Fiona wants to keep her past in the past.

I truly was not prepared to love this as much as I did.

Very topical with all that‘s STILL coming out from former teen stars. Fiona, former star of family network sitcom “Birds of California”, has left the biz years ago after a very public Britney-esque breakdown. Then talk of a reboot brings her former co-star Sam back into her life.

Cotugno expertly conveys the fireworks between the MCs, it was delightful. Really hot.
Really endearing.

I‘ve read and enjoyed a couple of Katie Cotugno‘s YA books, so I was excited to read her first adult novel, especially since it has such a beautiful cover! I used this one for my COVER APPEAL bingo square. I really liked reading about Fiona and Sam, who co-starred as teens on the hit tv series, Birds of California. This was the perfect lazy summer read, featuring a sweet, only slightly complicated romance and timely themes. 👍🏻

book 5/22 for 22.

After graduating, I worked at an indie bookstore & had the pleasure of interviewing Katie Cotugno as part of a YA Author‘s Panel. She was wonderful: relatable & sharp. Her personality infuses her writing with these same qualities. I was thrilled to see she was writing an Adult Romance title. It didn‘t disappoint. I devoured this book, about the former child stars of a sort-of Full House/Hannah Montana mash-up, in 24 hours.

TW: sexual abuse, PTSD.

Kitta Is it graphic about sexual assault or just her living with the aftermath/PTSD? I‘m been searching for something like the latter! The former is also okay but I need to know going in because it‘s a trigger for me. Thanks! 2y
monalyisha Hi, @Kitta! The actual sexual assault is not graphically described. In fact, it‘s mostly just implied for the bulk of the story. The only flashbacks into the past that the reader gets focus more on the grooming aspects of the assault (she‘s an impressionable teenager & he‘s much older & in a position of authority). It‘s more about how she goes on afterwards (& how her entire life is impacted). I think the author was very aware & cautious. 2y
Kitta Thank you! That‘s very helpful. 2y

Dammit, dammit, dammit. I just KNEW what her trauma was but kept hoping I was wrong. Still, this was an AMAZING story. You can‘t help but root for Fiona and Sam; they‘re likable enough to keep you drawn in and wanting more. Sam is painted kind of like a dumb jock, but he‘s not. Fiona might be a fictional Amanda Bynes. Book #25 in 2022
