IT STARTS WITH A BODY-a young woman found dead in an Iowa cornfield, on one of the few family farms still managing to compete with the giants of Big Agriculture. For Sergeant Riley Fisher, newly promoted to head of investigations at the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office, an already horrific crime takes on a personal edge when she discovers the victim is an old friend, from a dark past she thought she'd left behind. Rumour travels fast in small towns, while sweltering heat and state-wide elections only add to the pressure-cooker atmosphere. When another body is found, Riley is in danger of being engulfed by the fear and the frenzy. Something deeply disturbing is out there - and it reaches far beyond Black Hawk County. Beautifully written and masterfully crafted, The Fields is a stunning crime debut. 'Eerie & engaging. One of the best procedurals I've read in a good long while' Ace Atkins, bestselling author of The Revelators 'The sharp prose and explosive plot immediately drew me in, but the richly textured exploration of life in rural America stayed with me long after I finished. This is a classic crime series in the making' Cristina Alger, bestselling author of Girls Like Us 'Loved the vivid sense of place. Hints of True Detective & The Silence of the Lambs. EXCELLENT' Will Dean, bestselling author of The Last Thing to Burn

I decided to start this book. This is the first book in a series. I finished reading the second book Original Sins recently and now, I‘m reading this one because I liked the second one. This is an agricultural thriller. I‘ve never read an agricultural thriller before.

In preparation for the sequel (released today!) I listened to this first thriller featuring Sgt. Riley Fisher. Set in Iowa, the body count rises quick amongst the corn fields with a more far-reaching plot than it at first seems. And while some parts defy belief and others follow expected paths, this makes for a quick and entertaining listen. I am curious to see where the series goes next!

Very well-written by frustratingly unoriginal. Many of the characters are holdovers from crime novels that came before (the new detective on her first big case, the hard-ass Sheriff, etc.) In a genre as saturated as crime, originality is king.

The first book in a new series featuring Sargent Riley Fisher, this was entertaining enough even if the character types are recognizable & many of the plot points familiar. Which is to say while not the most original story I‘ve ever read, it kept me turning the pages & I did appreciate that it was set in a small town in Iowa instead of a big metropolis somewhere. Descriptions of crime were quite graphic so if that‘s not your thing, skip this one.

Started this one last night. I‘ve seen mixed reviews for it but I have to say it‘s entertaining so far.

This is one of the better suspense murder /mysteries. I enjoyed that the story line contained a touch of the occult. It truly kept me guessing until then very end. I also learned a lot of interesting facts about how big companies play a role in farming. Some of what I learned leads me to believe that this isn‘t necessarily a good thing. Thank you, Goodreads, for this book!

I‘m in two minds about how I feel about this book. On the one hand it‘s quite a gripping thriller, but on the other it‘s a little too political for my tastes. I thought the setting was well depicted and atmospheric. The plot, however, is somewhat complicated and concentration is needed.I‘m not a big fan of police procedural novels or serial killer chillers, but I can see that this one would appeal to quite a few enthusiasts of this genre.

I really enjoyed this book! This was a debut thriller and The first in a planned series and I can‘t wait to read more books from the author. I loved the character of Riley Fisher and I can‘t wait to see what‘s in store for her. I definitely look forward to more and I highly recommend this book if you are a thriller lover!

I received a copy of this book from Goodreads and the publisher in exchange for an honest review!

MyNamesParadise This looks so good! I bought it and haven‘t read it yet but I‘m so glad it‘s going to be a series! 1y

This mystery features a woman in a powerful position in a male-dominated field. That, along with an interesting storyline involving Big Agriculture, would have made for an excellent story. Unfortunately, an overreliance on brutal violence made this book much less desirable. Read my full review here: https://debbybrauer.org/#the-fields

Wow. This book is the first in a planned series, and all I can say is, when is the next book coming out? Riley Fisher and her dysfunctional family will captivate you. The story is one hell of a ride. Iowa, corn, hybrids, corruption, cannibalism, big Ag, China, murder, it‘s all there. Get in on the start of this series. You won‘t regret it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

There is a lot going on in this book - A lot of elements to the story, a lot of character names to retain, and a lot of graphic details to digest. For some, this will keep things interesting all the way through. I, however, did not find this to be overly thrilling and my investment in it wavered from time to time.

I didn't love this. There are too many names / characters and the plot is overly complicated for something that's actually trying to be a fairly basic detective novel. Because this is supposed to be the first in a series. And a series should be entertaining so you feel compelled to read the next.

TheAromaofBooks Sometimes it feels like authors spend way too much time setting up the series and not enough time actually telling THIS story. 2y

The story overall was ok, but I feel that Young was trying to capture some of the more recent female author‘s notoriety of success in recent years. There was nothing that made this book sparkle and shine in this genre. If you are hardcore fan of this genre, than I think it is worth a try, but since this is not my favorite genre, I have to find a story that is absolutely compelling to have me buy into additional stories.
