On Tyranny Graphic Edition
On Tyranny Graphic Edition: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century | Timothy Snyder
9 posts | 6 read | 6 to read
A graphic edition of historian Timothy Snyder's bestselling book of lessons for surviving and resisting America's arc toward authoritarianism, featuring the visual storytelling talents of renowned illustrator Nora Krug "Nora Krug has visualized and rendered some of the most valuable lessons of the twentieth century, which will serve all citizens as we shape the future."--Shepard Fairey, artist and activist Timothy Snyder's New York Times bestseller On Tyranny uses the darkest moments in twentieth-century history, from Nazism to Communism, to teach twenty lessons on resisting modern-day authoritarianism. Among the twenty include a warning to be aware of how symbols used today could affect tomorrow ("4: Take responsibility for the face of the world"), an urgent reminder to research everything for yourself and to the fullest extent ("11: Investigate"), a point to use personalized and individualized speech rather than clichd phrases for the sake of mass appeal ("9: Be kind to our language"), and more. In this graphic edition, Nora Krug draws from her highly inventive art style in Belonging--at once a graphic memoir, collage-style scrapbook, historical narrative, and trove of memories--to breathe new life, color, and power into Snyder's riveting historical references, turning a quick-read pocket guide of lessons into a visually striking rumination. In a time of great uncertainty and instability, this edition of On Tyranny emphasizes the importance of being active, conscious, and deliberate participants in resistance.

“In politics, being deceived is no excuse.” Leszek Kołakowski

Graphic novel and “only 120 pages” are very deceiving. This is a hard and important read. It made me rather ill but I‘m very glad I read it.

Love this graphic edition! I didn‘t compare the text side-by-side with the original version, but the graphic edition is definitely updated. References to all four years of Trump‘s control, including the pandemic. The collage style / mixed media presentation of the illustrations and photos enhances all of the ideas. Would make a great gift🎁

Breakfast with a book🤓📖 Excited to dive into this graphic edition and really pour over the illustrations.

Suet624 I didn‘t know they made a graphic version of the book. That‘s brilliant. 2y

This was just so excellent. It should be required reading in every middle and high school. The graphic novel edition takes Snyder's text on how tyrannical governments get power -- and how to resist -- and makes it even more accessible. Definitely going to be gifting this to my nephew!

Side note: I was reading this during #potteraday and saw so many parallels! HP + On Tyranny would make an excellent course together.

I really liked how the graphics added to the text through a mixture of illustration and photography. I thought it really brought the subject matter to life and made for a quick, engaging read. I thought it was a little weird how it referred to Trump as “an American president“ and the focus only on European democracies, but those were things that were done in the original edition as well and aren't just specific to the graphic edition.

Christine I‘m really looking forward to this one. 2y

History does not repeat, but it does instruct.
