Shadows of Pecan Hollow
Shadows of Pecan Hollow: A Novel | Caroline Frost
9 posts | 7 read | 8 to read
Dazzling, unexpected and profound, this is a shattering page-turner about how love can twist our lives into something we no longer recognize, and how we might find our way back to our best selves and to the communities that just might save us. In a word: brilliant. Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author of With or Without You Set in Texas in the 1970s and 90s, Shadows of Pecan Hollow is a literary debut about a fierce woman and the partner-in-crime she cant escape, perfect for readers of Where the Crawdads Sing and Valentine. It was 1970 when thirteen-year-old runaway Kit Walker was abducted by Manny Romero, a smooth-talking, low-level criminal, who first coddled her and then groomed her into his partner-in-crime. Before long, Kit and Manny were infamous for their string of gas station robberies throughout Texas, making a name for themselves as the Texaco Twosome. Fourteen years later, Kit has scraped together a life for herself and her daughter amongst the pecan trees and muddy creeks of the town of Pecan Hollow, far from Manny. But when he shows up at her doorstep a new man, fresh out of prison, Kits profound and twisted attachment to him compels her to let him in. Immediately, Kit is forced to reckon with the shadows of her past, and her community is sent into a tailspin. This gritty, penetrating, and unexpectedly tender novel ensnares the reader in its story of resilience and bonds that define us. With its rich rural landscape, indelible characters, and striking regional language, Shadows of Pecan Hollow is a hauntingly intimate and distinctly original debut about the complexity of loveboth romantic and familialand the strength and vulnerability of womanhood.

I loved this book! I had seen so many rave reviews about it so I was excited when I found it at the library. This book sucked me in and consumed me until I finished it. It is an excellent debut and I can‘t wait to see what else the author has in store!

This was such a great book, but there are some disturbing parts to it. I had to fast forward in a few sections. I almost stopped listening because I was afraid of the direction it was taking. I carried on with it though, and was happy I did.

SilversReviews I really liked this book. There were a few tough spots to get through, but overall…very good. Glad you liked it too. 2y

This book was right up my alley! I love a dark, complicated, morally ambiguous coming-of-age story and this did not disappoint. The ending did feel a little too tidy for my taste, considering how perfectly complex the rest was, but overall I completely inhaled it. A very promising debut and I look forward to seeing what Frost does next! 👏🏽

FULL REVIEW 2/12.

WOW, WOW, WOW!!

Abandoned at birth, many foster homes, and unknowingly kidnapped by a "kind" man.

SHADOWS OF PECAN HOLLOW flows easily and is very descriptive.

A very well written, outstanding debut.
