Big fan of crime fiction with lots of technical details so I loved this.

I just discovered this Scottish police procedural series (DS Max Craigie) and thoroughly enjoyed the first one, reading it in two sittings. It deals with mobsters, a blood feud and crooked cops. This slightly dark tale has a touch of humour with a plot that flows well and I never felt that it dragged. I will be looking for the next three in the series and may also check out the author's original series (Tim Novak). 4.5/5 stars!

This was a great police procedural - fast-paced, excellent plotline, & genuinely likeable main characters. Main character, Max Craigie, is a welcome change from the usual gruff, sometimes misogynistic police types. His relationship with Janie gives off vibes of perhaps becoming a genuine friendship, & fingers crossed, we may get a male/female cop duo who don't fall for each other. All in all, I really couldn't fault this. 5🌟

Not thrilled that the first murder was committed by a person living with mental illness and that said person was off their meds when the murder was committed. It‘s such an overused trope. The person committed only the one murder, though, and was put up to the job, which is I suppose a bit of a change from the usual psychopath serial killer, so I guess this is a low Pick? Really not sure.

Loved the first book in this series set in Scotland (tagged book) and now book 2 available for request on NetGalley for a review.

EadieB Thanks! I just requested it! Hope you had a great birthday today! 2y
Andrew65 Thanks a quiet productive day. With COvID around makes it almost impossible to celebrate. We still are not eating out and not prepared to go to a hotel for the weekend which we‘d normally do. 2y
EadieB @Andrew65 I agree! Not worth taking chances! 2y

The head of Scotland‘s most powerful crime family is brutally murdered, his body dumped inside an ancient grave in a remote cemetery. Detectives Max Craigie and Janie Calder arrive at the scene, a small town where everyone has secrets to hide. They soon realise this murder is part of a blood feud between two Scottish families that stretches back to the 1800s.

EadieB Now Max and Janie must turn against their closest colleagues. This book is a complete page turner. It grabbed me from the start and kept me on the edge of my seat. Lancaster is a great storyteller with excellent twists and great characters. Can't wait to read the next book in the series in order to get back to see what's happening with these characters. If you like books about police corruption then you will enjoy this book. (edited) 2y

5th book finished for #AwesomeAugust

This was an excellent book and a good introduction to a new detective who I look forward to spending time with in the future. This was set in Scotland, and although based in Southern Scotland a lot of this take s place in remote Northern Scotland. It revolved around a family feud being reinstigated that started in previous centuries.

Andrew65 Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publishers for providing a copy of this book for me, for an an open and honest review. 3y
