The Wreckage of My Presence
The Wreckage of My Presence: Essays | Casey Wilson
17 posts | 22 read | 22 to read
Laugh-out-loud, deeply insightful, and emotion-filled essays from multitalented actress, comedian, podcaster, and writer Casey Wilson. Casey Wilson has a lot on her mind and she isnt afraid to share. In this dazzling collection, each essay skillfully constructed and brimming with emotion, she shares her thoughts on the joys and vagaries of modern-day womanhood and motherhood, introduces the not-quite-typical family that made her who she is, and persuasively argues that lowbrow pop culture is the perfect lens through which to examine human nature. Whether shes extolling the virtues of eating in bed, processing the humiliation over her fathers late in life perm, mourning her mother's passing, or revealing her patented method for keeping the mystery alive in a marriage, Casey is witty, candid, and full of poignant and funny surprises. Humorous dives into her obsessions and areas of personal expertiseself-help, nice guys, cool girls (not her) and how to receive visitors in the bathare matched by touching meditations on female friendship, anger, grief, motherhood, and identity. Reading The Wreckage of My Presence is like spending time with a close frienda deeply passionate, full-tilt, joyous, excessive, compulsive, shameless, hungry-for-it-all, loyal, cheerleading friend. A friend who is ready for any big feelings that come her wayand isnt afraid to embrace them.

For a comedian, I cried more than I laughed with this one. Good book, interesting story and tribute her family.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Fun audiobook of essays. I really enjoyed most of them. Made for great company while puttering around doing weekend stuff around the house.

I didn‘t know that Wilson had published a book until I saw it on Litsy, but I love Happy Endings, so it was an immediate choice for my next audiobook. I enjoyed most of her essays, but I started feeling like all her essays were really just about her mother. It‘s still a pick because she‘s very heartfelt about her mom, but I didn‘t love it as much as I wanted to. Good book on audio, kept me interested on commutes.

This was definitely an Impulse read for #TeamGameSleighers as I kept hearing great things about this memoir. I enjoyed it and recommend for sure. I also finished this one while I was doing an amazing #audiowalk in the warm sunny weather to help with my mental/physical health. I think it was almost 80 degrees.

Morr_Books @aperfectmjk I know! I couldn't believe when I walked outside. Loving it even if it won't last. 2y

This was great!! A pleasant surprise, since I had no idea who the author is but @Megabooks and @britt_brooke recommended the audio ( and that was enough for me)🥰Casey Wilson has that like-ability factor that Jenny Lawson possess. She‘s self deprecating, honest and extremely funny. This was a perfect listen while I prepared dinner and did household chores.

britt_brooke She seems like someone I‘d want to be friends with IRL. Happy you enjoyed! 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Big thank you to Meg for putting this on my radar, and for Cindy's head's up on the recent #audible sale! Y'all are just the best bookish friends! I wasn't previously familiar with Wilson, and this was an unexpected, but absolute, delight. She's sincere and funny as hell. I just want to hang out with her, to be honest. She's seems like fun and is, no doubt, an amazing conversationalist. Really solid memoir!

Megabooks So glad you enjoyed it! 2y

Did the audiobook on this one & genuinely felt like LISTENING to her divulge and lament and rant and profess so earnestly, so candidly, added several layers to the experience. Not to mention benefiting from her fabulous comedic timing.

While her topics ranged from things totally foreign to me (the “Real Housewives of... “ TV shows) to those painfully relatable (complicated relationship with food), it was all enjoyable and very often moving.

2021 // 6: “Don‘t forget to take the wreckage of your presence.”

@caseyrosewilson has been my comedy icon since moving to New York in 2015. Taking a dive into these essays gave me joy and comfort with a healthy dose of self-actualization on some things. Happy Endings has also been my go-to show any time I‘m “going through it”, so it‘s only fitting that this book would have a same effect. Thank you. Ahmazing!

Sometimes I like a B (or C) list comedian‘s essays more than an A lister‘s. Such is the case with this gem from Casey. She talks about the very relatable issues of marriage and parenting while working. And even though that‘s not me, I related to terrible first job and her funny family stories. (Not to mention her love of reality TV!) I‘ll definitely seek out more from Casey.

@britt_brooke I think you‘d enjoy this! (Probably a good #audiobook)

Cinfhen Not familiar with this comedian but essay collection sounds great 😊 3y
britt_brooke I don‘t her, but this sounds good. Thanks!! #stacked 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen @britt_brooke I hadn‘t heard of her either. Apparently she was on SNL for two seasons as well as a network sitcom called Happy Endings. 🤷🏻‍♀️ She does comedy writing as well (Bride Wars is a major credit), so I‘m guessing that‘s why the book was so enjoyable! 3y
Cinfhen This is today‘s #AudibleDeal @britt_brooke I‘m gonna pick it up 😄 2y

My foraging listen for the week. (Might be good luck bc: Reishi!). My wife loves anything Real-Housewives and apparently Casey has a podcast on them, so I got her this book and jumped in as well. She‘s funny, and has funny stories! Def recommend if you‘re into childhood tales, Hollywood, feminism, relationships, and other random funny stuff!

Didn't finish as many books this month as I often do but they were all winners. I was surprised by how much I loved The Wreckage of My Presence and Boyfriend Material, both of which I consumed via audiobook and I believe are best consumed that way. 💯

4⭐This collection was so funny (I laughed out loud multiple times), but it was also sharp and insightful, and had a lot of heart. Casey Wilson‘s stories felt honest and open, which I really appreciated when it came to her mental health and grief, and her love for her family, especially her mother, really came through. This was heartwarming, but also unexpectedly tugged at the heartstrings. Casey Wilson is a delight and this was a great read! #arc
