The Last Green Valley
The Last Green Valley | Mark Sullivan
"Mark Sullivan has done it again! The Last Green Valley is a compelling and inspiring story of heroism and courage in the dark days at the end of World War II." --Kristin Hannah, #1 New York Times bestselling author From the author of the #1 bestseller Beneath a Scarlet Sky comes a new historical novel inspired by one family's incredible story of daring, survival, and triumph. In late March 1944, as Stalin's forces push into Ukraine, young Emil and Adeline Martel must make a terrible decision: Do they wait for the Soviet bear's intrusion and risk being sent to Siberia? Or do they reluctantly follow the wolves--murderous Nazi officers who have pledged to protect "pure-blood" Germans? The Martels are one of many families of German heritage whose ancestors have farmed in Ukraine for more than a century. But after already living under Stalin's horrifying regime, Emil and Adeline decide they must run in retreat from their land with the wolves they despise to escape the Soviets and go in search of freedom. Caught between two warring forces and overcoming horrific trials to pursue their hope of immigrating to the West, the Martels' story is a brutal, complex, and ultimately triumphant tale that illuminates the extraordinary power of love, faith, and one family's incredible will to survive and see their dreams realized.

While The First Ladies made this a difficult decision, ultimately the tagged book won out. The range of emotions it had me experience while reading it made for an incredible experience. While not all those emotions were good, I‘d recommend this to anyone. #readingbracket2023

#readingbracket2023 update

The latter half of the year is more subject to the one or two books I‘ve been able to read. Unless it‘s a strong finish, guessing my January book (tagged) will take it all but it was very good. I think of it often

Tagged book still proving to be a strong favorite this year, but followed closely by Telegraph Club. Maybe it‘s recency bias, but Last Night at the Telegraph Club is an important story that should be read. Green Valley pulls through for me as it is just so epic and really made me experience all the emotions and Telegraph Club is a little limited being a YA novel. But both are so good! #readingbracket2023

It was interesting to follow this family's struggles and how they fought against troubles. They had hard will to survive. But I still would have loved to get more of these characters: writing style left them a bit flat and I wasn't 100 % invested in them.

This was a bit hard book to read and made me to think about all possible sad things.

This was a bit too detailed and partly repetitive.

This may be one of the most incredible stories I‘ve read…and it‘s based on real events. I feel like everyone should read this as it displays the best of humanity when humans are being the worst. You will experience all the emotions but come away in awe of this family and what they‘ve experienced.

4.75⭐️ I really liked the book. Even though the characters were real people, the author did an excellent job of making Emil and Adelaide shine. The duel points of view were really well done. The one thing I didn‘t like was that he rushed the ending. Personally I wished he had ended the book at Chapter 40 and not added Chapter 41. #2021 #fiction #basedonatruestory #historicalfiction #bookreview #bookstagram #wwii #coldwar #ukraine🇺🇦

This story was very inspiring, and made me think about what is important in life. The obstacles that this family endured on their journey to the US amazed me. It‘s hard to believe that one family can go through so much, and still remain strong. The description at the end of the book of their final home made it sound breathtaking. This book was definitely worth the read!!

This story started in rural Ukraine. Imagine being caught between the Nazis and the Soviets. As the Martel family began their journey to freedom, they suffered through and endured many hardships and obstacles. I wish that I could have met Emil and Adeline! Even though we weren‘t given the opportunity to meet in real life, I was given the privilege of meeting them through the pages of this beautifully written book.

It‘s 1944 and the Martels are just one of the German families that have to make a difficult decision as Stalin‘s troops push into Ukraine. Do they follow the (wolves) Nazis who have pledged to protect pure-blood Germans? Or do to wait for the (bear) Soviet invasion and risk being sent to Siberia? The Martel‘s hope to escape to the West but are caught between two warring forces. The story is about community, love, faith, and the will to survive.
