Beach Read meets Sweetbitter in this laugh-out-loud and ultimately heartwarming debut of a good friend's very bad decision and the summer job that stands to ruin or make her life. What if you could be someone else for the summer? Birdy has made a mistake. Everyone imagines running away from their life at some point. But Birdy has actually done it. And the life she's run into is her best friend Heather's. The only problem is, she hasn't told Heather. The summer job at the highland Scottish hotel that her world class wine-expert friend ditched turns out to be a lot more than Birdy bargained for. Can she survive a summer pretending to be her best friend? And can Birdy stop herself from falling for the first man she's ever actually liked, but who thinks she's someone else? One good friend's very bad decision is at the heart of this laugh-out-loud love story and unexpected tale of a woman finally finding herself in the strangest of places.

I was surprised by how much I truly enjoyed this! I expected it to be a fun diversion, something light and breezy for a warm weekend. What I didn't expect was to become so invested in the story of two friends, each bringing quite a bit of baggage to the table, but helping one another get through every time. I loved that the ending wasn't all tied up with a bow; still a little uncertainty, but a confidence that we'd see our MC get there in time.

A laugh out loud story with a heartwarming cast of characters. Birdy pretends to be someone else to have a break and start a new job in a hotel in the highlands but she hasn‘t told her best friend Heather. Can she survive the summer pretending to be Heather?
The hotel is meant to be run down and a summer jaunt but this is not what Birdy finds.
Instead she finds an upmarket, boutique hotel. How long can she keep her secret for? A great debut novel

TheAromaofBooks Oh, this one sounds fun!!! 2y

I really enjoyed this story set at a hotel in the highlands. Lots laughs , great set of charterers and think I may have a slight crush on the chef!

A romance novel set in a remote hotel in Scotland. Between jobs and apartments, Birdy takes her friend Heather‘s place (…and identity) as a sommelier for a summer job. She falls in love with the place and the people, and the chef especially, even as she is pretending to be someone she‘s not.

I rarely give up on books, despite my better judgment, & was 100% hate-reading this book, which Emily Henry called “my perfect Summer read.” Until…at a certain point…I wasn‘t? I actually started to enjoy it? The premise is completely stupid & the MC is selfish & horrible but BY GOLLY if she doesn‘t grow! The shy Scottish chef & his partially-renovated cabin growing out of the craggy hillside on the Loch didn‘t hurt. There‘s real pathos by the end!

#unpopularopinion but, the premise of this one really bothered me. I kept waiting for the main character to come clean about her deception and/or suffer some consequences for being sort of a bad person but nada. #ARC #Edelweiss

Quick read...interesting characters and storyline. Birdy takes a job but doesn‘t use her own name. She was wearing her friend Heather‘s name tag and ended up entering the job using Heather‘s name instead of her own. Sometimes it‘s easier trying to be someone else so you can find yourself.

4/5 for this! I enjoyed this book. Birdy was such a fun character. I loved the small community and all the people. This was a laughable and heartwarming story. This one will definitely make you hungry and want some good wine. This is the perfect summer read. Thank you to G. P. Putnam‘s Sons and Netgalley for an ebook arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this story about a 30ish Londoner (Birdy) trying to find what makes her happy and being able to commit to it. She‘s down on her luck and ends up taking a job in Scotland in her best friend‘s name (her friend turned it down for a trip to Italy). As her friend was a sommelier and Birdy is most definitely not, problems and guilt arise. The cast of characters are fantastic, and it‘s nice to witness Birdy‘s road to maturity and happiness. 🔻

robinb My only caveats were the language, which I found unnecessary for the story and my own frustration with Birdy‘s waffling between being honest with everyone about her subterfuge and trying to cover her track of lies. But overall, I enjoyed this one. 4/5⭐️ 3y

The Summer Job is an enjoyable escapist read with enough guts to earn your respect. Of course, there‘s a love interest, the dreamy sous-chef James, but it‘s not the be-all-and-end-all of the story, which is a relief. Really, Birdy‘s relationship with Heather is the defining element of this novel, and her desire to get more out of life. Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/new-releases/

A cute story this was. It was quite predictable in places and yet I loved it. The plot is steady and builds to a very adorable ending. I must admit i can be a sucker for a happy ending. It also makes a lovely change from the usual crime/thrillers that I read. The characters are all well written especially Elizabeth, she has her own flaws but you watch her grow as the story develops. The story really expresses the beauty of the location. #Netgalley

Good. Interesting characters and concept. Shows how sometimes you need to pretend to be someone else to find who you really are. Nice easy read full of food, drink and romance. Thank you #Penquin for inviting me to read this via #Netgalley.
