The Princess Game
The Princess Game | Soman Chainani
14 posts | 17 read | 3 to read
There are no happy endings for the Princesses of Chaminade High in this short, twisty tale of teenage murder games by the New York Times bestselling author of The School for Good and Evil series.
The victims are the most popular girls in school, each murdered and arranged in a grim fairy-tale tableau. To find the killer, rookie detective Callum Pederson has gone undercover where the Princes hold court. He’s found enough secrets among the bros to bring them in for questioning—but he could very well get lost in the games the Princes play.
The Princess Game is part of Faraway, a collection of retold fairy tales that take the happily-ever-after in daring new directions. Whether read or listened to in one sitting, prepare to be charmed, moved, enlightened, and frightened all over again.

Book 8 of 2024.

Solid subversion of fairytale tropes - a hard and ugly look at (high school) misogyny being instilled via toxic masculinity and wanting to “fit in”. The sidebar of the undercover cop-student relationship wasn‘t great…but it fit for the idea expressed. Despite being a short story, this was well fleshed out and didn‘t feel rushed. Quality YA fantasy horror.

The Faraway Collection of short stories from Amazon are fairy tale retellings. I enjoyed Hazel and Gray and The Princess Game. I would read longer versions of those stories! The others were just OK.

This one was sooooo good! A short little murder mystery; the ultimate “bros before hoes”. I really enjoyed it!

The 3rd short story I‘ve read from the faraway collection. Two detectives investigate the murder of 5 girls nicknamed “the princesses” at a high school.
I found the style of writing difficult to read and nearly bailed a few times.#fairytales #faraway #shortstories #amazonoriginals

This is my favorite so far out of the faraway collection (ive got one more to go i think) i LOVE audiobooks that are performed kinda like old classic radio shows.

monkeygirlsmama I love old radio shows and now kind of want to go back to these again but in audio this time just to see what you're talking about. 3y

I‘ve just...outgrown stories where violence against women is just a fun narrative device. 2 stars only because I enjoyed the epistolary format.

This gets a pick because it's fast paced and just eviscerated every Disney prince ever. Like just ruins them all. Seriously a fun read if you think Prince Eric was trash and that the Beast is really the bad guy and Belle deserved better because they all deserve better.

This is so messed up but so good! Toxic masculinity abounds in this high school, and murder right alongside it. There are so many things to talk about in this amazing sorry story.

Wow. I‘ve really been enjoying the faraway collection as a whole, but this one takes the cake. Moments of heart-stopping, edge-of-your-seat suspense and the commentary on our society in the current climate post #MeToo. Brilliant storytelling. I‘ll definitely be checking out more from this author.

"It isn‘t about the “Princesses” in the slightest. It‘s the Princes who are playing games. It‘s always been about them."

Soman Chainani has penned a beautifully intricate and hard-hitting tale that leaves you ruminating long after it's finished. The Disney princes are the only characters retaining their fairy-tale names and the girls, the so-called princesses, possess random names, the only distinction afforded to them is based on their hotness?

truthinfiction It's essentially a story of how boys and men are sucked into the cycle of toxic masculinity and how they keep each other trapped in it. Divorcing yourself from emotions is enforced if you want to become and stay a part of the elite. This elite that lures you in with the promise of power and desirability, establishing that women are trophies, and can be dispensed with if your fragile ego requires so. It's a despairing tale with no happy endings. 3y

Nute Your last two reviews have been amazing! While Ken Liu was a known author to me whose books I have read (The Grace of Kings and The Wall of Storms), this author is known but unread. I might now skip The School for Good and Evil and start here with this book instead...just to see if any princes are saved or worth saving! 3y
truthinfiction @Nute Thank you for your kind words! This short story kept me thinking long after it was finished. The takeaway from the book was how easy it is to fall into these patterns and it just blew my mind. I hope you won't be disappointed. 3y

Faraway, #3

Whoa, so far this was my favorite of the Faraway series! It was incredibly well developed for such a short story. Also I loved how creative the author was with using real fairy tale names of people and places in new and improved ways here.

Solid 5 stars
