Of Thee I Sing
Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters | Barack Obama
20 posts | 31 read | 27 to read
In this tender, beautiful letter to his daughters, President Barack Obama has written a moving tribute to thirteen groundbreaking Americans and the ideals that have shaped our nation. From the artistry of Georgia O'Keeffe, to the courage of Jackie Robinson, to the patriotism of George Washington, President Obama sees the traits of these heroes within his own children, and within all of Americas children. Breathtaking, evocative illustrations by award-winning artist Loren Long at once capture the personalities and achievements of these great Americans and the innocence and promise of childhood. This beautiful book celebrates the characteristics that unite all Americans, from our nations founders to generations to come. It is about the potential within each of us to pursue our dreams and forge our own paths. It is a treasure to cherish with your family forever. From the Hardcover edition.

This was really sweet. A great variety of Americans to inspire his daughters. I also liked that the characters traded things as the story progressed on the left page of each spread.

While I enjoyed the entire book, this photo of Albert Einstein really stuck with me.

A sweet book written by President Obama to his daughters with messages every child needs to hear and tributes to a crowd of diverse Americans who‘ve made our country what it is. Well done!

This is a nice little book. The intention is to be inspirational, but the comparisons could be off-putting to some

Saw a copy of this at the Chinese language section of a bookstore over the weekend. Didn‘t see the English edition.
This illustrated book is a tribute to 13 inspirational Americans, a charming way of introducing some great figures to his daughters and explaining how inspiring they were.

i loved this sweet letter of encouragement and love from my favorite president, Obama, to his daughters.

I don't know about you, but I would love to have received a letter like this when I was younger....who am I kidding, I'd love one now 😂😍

This book is a NF and could be used in a classroom as a LC and/or DR. This story is about thirteen great Americans that have made a huge impact on the USA and the story is being dedicated by Barack Obama to his daughters. He slides back into time to talk about Jackie Robinson, Martin Luther King, Cesar Chavez and many more. #ucflae3414su19

Stephanie5 The ESOL strategy I would use for this book is 32 since it could be used in LC to make sure they report and come to a conclusion. The UDL I would use would be 6.1 to make sure they are responsible for what they have read. https://achievethecore.org/content/upload/Of%20Thee%20I%20Sing%20-%20Other.docx this activity will help create better understanding and will lay out what needs to be answered and what needs to be known by the story. 5y
DrSpalding This is a high-quality resource. Continue using this. I am not sure that literature circles or dramatic reenactment are the best strategies but you could try them. 5y

#bbrc #a2z Letter O #picturebook

Obama's unwavering optimism shines through in this tender and sweet picture book that is a letter to his daughters. I love the messaging of telling his daughters (and readers) how much potential they have, while relating it to a diverse selection of influential figures in history.

The format is simple, a question followed by a very brief bio of someone who exemplifies that trait. For example, “Have I told you you‘re creative?” is followed by a short snippet on Georgia O‘Keeffe, etc. These little snippets aren‘t supposed to be in-depth biographies, just a quick summary of who that person was. Then the book closes with the simple reminder that we‘re all connected as Americans and that our diversity makes us who we are.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I loved this. It is inspirational without being saccharine, it offers a diverse picture of what it means to be a good person and a good citizen, and it is a tender letter from father to daughters. It is a tribute to historical figures without turning them into paragons. This is a really well-done picture book.

batsy I'm still wondering how it happened... How it went from that to this... 6y
readordierachel @batsy It's a waking nightmare. If nothing else, the current shitshow is making many Americans more engaged in politics. 😕 6y

[Book 5 of 2018] The reading experience would be better in color, but I didn't like the book as much as I expected. I was not a big fan of the really short bios of inspirational people mixed in with wishes for his daughters. It felt like two books shortened into one. Two good kids' books, but still. Sorry, Obama 😐 He did write very thoughtfully about Martin Luther King in just a few lines, while not (falsely) saying his dream has been achieved.

Barack Obama pays homage to 13 historical figures that changed the course of history in this NF text. He wrote this book as a letter to his daughters to show them that he sees a piece of each of these figures in them. The illustrations show each figure as a child and I think this helps show kids that we all start from the same place and if we make the right choices, we can do anything.

kenyanellie Here is a lesson to go along with your RA: http://writingfix.com/Picture_Book_Prompts/Of_Thee_I_Sing1.htm. UDL1.3: Offer alternatives for visual information and ESOL 48: Use group assignments, portfolios, learning journals and non-print options as alternative assessment 6y
ashley.v This sounds like a really good book. I'll have to read it. 6y
amandagrant This looks like such a beautiful book with a powerful message. Will have to look into adding it to my classroom library. Thank you for the insight! 6y

Have I told you: how wonderful you are? That you are creative? That you are smart? That you are brave? That you are a healer? That you have your own song? That you are strong? How important it is to honor others' sacrifices? That you are kind? That you don't give up? That you are inspiring? To be proud to be American?
