In this chilling true-crime thriller by New York Times bestselling journalist M. William Phelps, a womans mysterious death in upstate New York plunges her family into a nightmare of backstabbing and vengeance . . . In July 2015, Mary Yoder returned home from the chiropractic center that she operated with her husband, Bill, complaining that she felt unwell. Mary, health-conscious and vibrant, was suddenly vomiting, sweating, and weak. Doctors in the ER and ICU were baffled as to the cause of her rapidly progressing illness. Her loved onesincluding Bill and their children, Adam, Tamryn, and Lianagathered in shock to say goodbye. In the weeks that followed Marys death, the grief-stricken family received startling news from the medical examiner: Mary had been deliberately poisoned. The lethal substance was colchicine, a chemical used to treat gout but extremely toxic if not taken as prescribed. Mary did not have gout. Another bombshell followed when the local sheriffs office received a claim that Adam Yoder had poisoned his mother. But Adam was not the only person of interest in the case. Pretty and popular Kaitlyn Conley, Adams ex-girlfriend, worked at the Yoders clinic. Shed even been at Marys bedside during those last terrible hours. Still, some spoke of her talent for manipulation and a history of bizarre, rage-fueled behavior against anyone who dared to reject her. Had Kaitlyn and Adam conspired to kill Mary Yoder, or was the killer someone else entirely? In another twist, accusations were hurled at Bill Yoder himself, ricocheting blame in still another direction . . . Renowned investigative journalist M. William Phelps details this incredible story piece by piece, revealing a heartless plan of revengea scheme that would tear a family apart, divide a community, and result in two gripping, high-profile trials.

This wasn‘t a perfect read, but I was incredibly intrigued by the information. I‘d been unfamiliar with the case before learning about this book. I‘ve now found myself researching things further, although the author was very thorough, so there isn‘t a lot to discover beyond what‘s presented in the book.

Thank you to #Netgalley and #KensingtonBooks for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoy reading True Crime books when the author focused primarily on the victim and the hole their death left behind instead of spending all their time on the murderer and this book really lets the reader get to know the victim, Dr Mary Yoder while it takes you through all the unbelievable twists and turns of this fascinating book.

This is a true crime story that is gripping and keeps you at the edge of your seat. It is about Dr. Mary Yoder's murder. The investigation of what killed her and who did it. Mary was loved by all of her patients and everyone had only good things to say about her. She had no enemies. The on and off relationship of the son and the ex-girlfriend. Gripping story.

Thank you @bookishfirst

#NetGalley #AudioArc This was good but not great. I thought it was longer than necessary and while gripping at times, it lacked the WHOA factor. Narration was clear, easy to follow and the journalist did a good job of laying out all the facts. #BorrowNotBuy It‘s a soft pick 😊

Reviewsbylola I‘m halfway through now and really enjoying it! I hadn‘t realized that even though the cause of Mary‘s illness was detected almost immediately, the suspicion of murder came much later. I guess I can understand accidental poisoning, but besides her being a gardener, there‘s really nothing to suggest she could have accidentally poisoned herself. 3y
Cinfhen I thought this was a little too long but it was compelling @Reviewsbylola sad how Mary Yoder lost her life😢 3y
Reviewsbylola It‘s awful. And I mean, I should have realized Katie Conley was a totally manipulative, evil person based on the crime committed, but whoa, I had no idea the level of batshit we were dealing with. 3y

Reviewsbylola I can‘t stop listening. Which is good news for my house, because I keep finding things to clean. 🤪 3y
Reviewsbylola I cannot BELIEVE Katie sent that anonymous letter implicating adam. Just handed over all of that evidence against herself on a silver platter. She obviously feels she‘s smarter than everyone. 3y
Cinfhen @Reviewsbylola she obviously suffers from a narcissistic complexion/ she‘s really sick in the head 3y

Cinfhen @Reviewsbylola you should request this audio arc / it was excellent 3y

Time after time I‘m amazed at what people think they can get away with (and perplexed how some do). We Thought We Knew You, while not the very best true crime I‘ve read, definitely did not disappoint!
