Ana on the Edge
Ana on the Edge | A. J. Sass
13 posts | 8 read | 7 to read
For fans of George and Ivy Aberdeen's Letter to the World, a heartfelt story about a nonbinary character navigating a binary world. Twelve-year-old Ana-Marie Jin, the reigning US Juvenile figure skating champion, is not a frilly dress kind of kid. So, when Ana learns that next season's program will be princess themed, doubt forms fast. Still, Ana tries to focus on training and putting together a stellar routine worthy of national success. Once Ana meets Hayden, a transgender boy new to the rink, thoughts about the princess program and gender identity begin to take center stage. And when Hayden mistakes Ana for a boy, Ana doesn't correct him and finds comfort in this boyish identity when he's around. As their friendship develops, Ana realizes that it's tricky juggling two different identities on one slippery sheet of ice. And with a major competition approaching, Ana must decide whether telling everyone the truth is worth risking years of hard work and sacrifice.

The main character in this is figuring out her gender identity and thinking she might be nonbinary. So so glad this book exists for kids. The skating though? Not for me. And there was a lot of skating, lol.

This book was such an interesting tale of a skater hitting that space where things seem to get so much more complicated as you change from "girl" to "lady" in the sports world and realizing maybe the skating world doesn't have words for things that aren't a girl or a boy, but the rest of the world might.

The plot was just taking sooooo long to pick up. I got over halfway done and it just felt like almost nothing had happened.

charl08 Is this too obvious? I am not the target audience, but dis think it was very well done. 3y
Karisa Magnus Chase's Alex Fierro is genderfluid. Prince and the Dressmaker's prince likes to dress in drag but not exactly nonbinary. Catfishing on Catnet has a few nonbinary characters. Technically YA but feels like a young YA to me 3y
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards I'll be saving these recs too - looking to compile lists for my Children's Lit classes! 3y

Ooh, I loved this one! Ana is an ice skating champion (7th grade) who increasingly feels frustration at the costumes, styles, and music that are picked out for her. When a new friend mistakes her for male she finds a reluctance to correct him.

What a fantastic middle-grade story about starting to figure out identity. Note: At the end Ana still uses she/her pronouns, but has made other changes.

MariettaSG Is it a graphic novel? The cover gives me that impression but I can‘t be sure. 3y
BookInMyHands @MariettaSG Good question- no this one isn‘t a graphic novel 3y

@Clwojick impulse read +11 📖⛸

I'm enjoying another winter of dance and skating reads! ❄️ This hearty story is soo good; on navigating continued success in youth champ programs, while newly exploring one's feel of identity. Trans & Non-Binary #LGBTQ reading is a high recommend here; complex as can seem to be, but insightful on unique and androgynous views; the uneasy ups & downs, seeking true balance. 🤓 Love! @matokah

I‘m not sure when I‘ll absolutely know if I fall in between a boy and a girl, or outside that binary entirely ... Uncertainty feels like less of a burden and more of an opportunity.

I am Ana and Ana is I.

I‘m done being anyone but me.

SpiderCrafts I look forward to reading your book, through next week and during the winter read festivities here on Litsy. 🙂✨ These relatable LGBTQ stories really mean a lot! -- Cheers and best wishes! ❄️ 3y

I'm not sure if my folks generally want to go for mall stores, other than all local this year for Christmas shopping. -- If I don't see the chance or luck soon, I'll pick up the digital Ana On The Edge for my #WinterGames reading. That's on iBooks, but not found on Google Books for tablet, other than the audio version there. I have an advantage anyway between both. This winter could mean more of the digital, than the physical buys. ❄️
