When her only child dies in a car accident, Chris begins regularly visiting the roadside marker where the fatal accident occurred. While visiting the marker nearly two years after her son's death she accidentally cuts herself, resulting in a late night vision; setting in motion an escalating series of events & sacrifices. It has been a bit since I have read an indie horror novella & this was an excellent one. There's the obvious comparisons (cont)

vivastory with Pet Cemetery, but this is very much a unique spin on grief horror. For those who read horror more in the fall, I think that this would be an excellent choice. I read it easily in one sitting & the majority of it takes place during fall, plus the mother & son are fans of horror films, adding more horror seasoning. Excited to read more of Hightower's works, esp. as I have heard wonderful things about Below.

batsy This book sounds good! Such a shame about Litsy not being available on the Google Playstore anymore. 11mo

Reggie I listened to this on my way to Denver last year when going to see Philip Fracassi and had to pull into Colorado Springs to eat to stop crying. Lol. And Below is very awesome. (edited) 10mo
vivastory @Reggie Haha. Below sounds intrigiung. If I'm not wrong it's her take on the mothman legend? I have to admit, I feel pretty indifferent to Richard Gere but I really liked Mothman Prophecies. Plus Laura Linney 💙 10mo
Reggie Yes. And I‘m sad to say, I have never watched the movie. Laura Linney- she‘s great. One of my favorite movies of hers is The Exorcism of Emily Rose which I think she probably got because of her performance as a lawyer in Primal Fear. So good! 10mo

A mother slowly falling apart after the death of her son, with a paranormal twist.

On the tin, this doesn‘t look like something I‘d like—grief, self harm, slow deconstruction of psyche—but damn, is it well done. Visceral, full of body horror and genuine emotions, with a clear direction.

I can handle (and like) reading about fictional terrible things as long as I‘m forewarned and prepared for it. And when it‘s written well.

4.0/5

Kenyazero Sounds like a tough but excellent read 13mo
eol It is. I sometimes have trouble with a this type of horror, so I was really surprised I liked it. It's a novella, which I could read in one sitting instead of carrying the emotions around for several days, and I think that's part of the reason. 13mo

Photo credit: Marian Voicu. My horror journey started on the road today listening to this extremely well written horror novella of grief. Chris cannot stop visiting the sight where her son died from a car accident. She stumbles on a way that might bring him back. It was so emotional @LeahBergen ☝🏽these were my eyes the last hour listening to the book. So much so I had to pull over in Colorado Springs to get a Bingo Burger combo to lift my 👇🏼

Reggie spirits. The special of the month- the Turkey Lurkey- turkey burger with sweet potato tater tots inside with a cranberry mayo. Yummy. Also, read this book. It deserves to be read. 1y

Reggie @AmyG because I hardly ever do audio I know horror is one of the genres that‘ll hook me. 1y
Reggie @stretchkev yeah, I was surprised at how well written it was and the depth of story. And the part where Chris confronts her mother Lenora- jeeeez! So good. 1y
Reggie @LeahBergen even when I was eating the burger I had one of those after book tremor cries. Lol 1y
Centique That is a lot of tears - whoa! I hope the Turkey Lurkey helped. 🥰 1y
Rissreads I love that you are so invested in your books that you cry. You had me at ‘sweet potato tater tots!‘ ♥️ 1y

4½⭐
This is a story of the lengths one woman will go to just to try and commune with her deceased son. I was surprised by how much meat there is to this story when it was only three and a half hours long. In that short amount of time, it packed one helluva gut punch. Right in the feels. It even had me looking up an interview with the author on youtube just to figure out exactly what went down at the very end.

A gruesome slice of body horror (no pun intended) focused on grief and motherhood. Told with exacting prose. Definitely worth checking out.

Novella about a woman who loses her son in an automobile accident. Then one day visiting his roadside memorial she accidentally spills blood on the ground and he seems to come back. But is it really her son, or something darker? In any case the price of seeing him again is more blood .... This one packs a punch. TW for self-harm.

This book. If you are a fan of grief horror, like Pet Sematary, you will love this amazing novella. It is both heartbreaking and terrifying. So so good!
