Grandmothers from eight eastern African countries welcome you into their kitchens to share flavorful recipes and stories of family, love, and tradition in this transporting cookbook-meets-travelogue. In this incredible volume, renowned food writer Julia Turshen and Somali chef Hawa Hassan present 75 recipes and stories gathered from bibis (or grandmothers) from eight African nations: South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar, Comoros, Tanzania, Kenya, Somalia, and Eritrea. Most notably, these eight countries are at the backbone of the spice trade, many of them exporters of things like pepper and vanilla. We meet women such as Ma Shara, who helps tourists "see the real Zanzibar" by teaching them how to make her famous Ajemi Bread with Carrots and Green Pepper; Ma Vicky, a real-life princess from Tanzania, who now lives in suburban New York and makes a mean Matoke (Stewed Plantains with Beans and Beef); and Ma Gehennet from Eritrea who shares her recipes for Kicha (Eritrean Flatbread) and Shiro (Ground Chickpea Stew). Through Julia and Hawa's writing--and their own personal stories--the women, and the stories behind the recipes, come to life. With evocative photography shot on location by Khadija Farah, and food photography by Jennifer May, In Bibi's Kitchen uses food to teach us all about families, war, loss, migration, refuge, and sanctuary.

I absolutely loved flipping through this cookbook that covered several African countries. The photography was lovely and the stories of the women featured were life giving. All of the food looked great but I am most excited to try Rum with Berry Soda from Mozambique, Shaah Cadays (chai) from Somalia, and Chakalaka & Cheddar Braaibroodjies (grilled cheese) from S Africa. #LMPBC will mail this week!

A vibrant, lovely book about culture, food, and family. It features a selection of fulfilled women sharing what is special to them and how they describe their place in the world.
I saved quite a few recipes to try - they are all very approachable!

Such a cool cookbook. It introduced the grandmas who gave the recipes and interviewed them. It also gave background on the countries they came from.

I read this charming cookbook more like a travel guide or geography book. Interviews with and recipes from several grandmother's from 8 different East African nations that border the indian ocean.

Serendipity! I have the right books in my hands at the right moment.

What an amazing work - not just a cookbook but a cultural food anthology of sorts. The introduction is an absorbing narrative and the interviews with the bibis (grandmothers) are delightful. Each bibi picked her own recipes to share and exemplify accessible home cooking. In fact they specifically selected dishes that are easy to prepare. Beautiful photos too of course.
