Whale Day: And Other Poems | Billy Collins
11 posts | 7 read | 4 to read
A collection of all-new poetry from Billy Collins, former U.S. Poet Laureate and "America's favorite poet" (The Wall Street Journal). Billy Collins's thirteenth collection, and first in four years, contains more than fifty new poems that showcase the playfulness, wit, and wisdom that have made him one of our most celebrated and widely read poets. This collection covers many themes and moods, including Collins's insights on the wonders of life and thrill of mortality.

I checked this out from the library because I wanted something short and funny. This book came up under humorous non-fiction, so I tried it. It‘s not funny, but at least it was short. Collins‘ poems don‘t require a lot of work to understand, and that‘s nice. Several of these poems are about death, but it was nicely handled and not morbid. He‘s good at making you expect one thing at the start and delivering a nice something different at the end.

In his latest collection, Billy Collins's trademark wit and humor are in evidence, but he is more focused on his and others' mortality than usual. Billy Collins is always a delight to read and that holds true here, too. His voice is always welcome. [I received an advanced e-copy through Netgalley. This book is due to be published September 29, 2020.]

LiteraryinLawrence I have loved Billy Collins for years. Thanks for letting me know he has a new collection! 4y
