Marrow: A Love Story
Marrow: A Love Story | Elizabeth Lesser
11 posts | 3 read | 23 to read
The author of the New York Times bestseller Broken Open returns with a visceral and profound memoir of two sisters who, in the face of a bone marrow transplant one the donor and one the recipient begin a quest for acceptance, authenticity, and most of all, love.A mesmerizing and courageous memoir: the story of two sisters uncovering the depth of their love through the life-and-death experience of a bone marrow transplant. Throughout her life, Elizabeth Lesser has sought understanding about what it means to be true to oneself and, at the same time, truly connected to the ones we love. But when her sister Maggie needs a bone marrow transplant to save her life, and Lesser learns that she is the perfect match, she faces a far more immediate and complex question about what it really means to love honestly, generously, and authentically. Hoping to give Maggie the best chance possible for a successful transplant, the sisters dig deep into the marrow of their relationship to clear a path to unconditional acceptance. They leave the bone marrow transplant up to the doctors, but take on what Lesser calls a "soul marrow transplant," examining their family history, having difficult conversations, examining old assumptions, and offering forgiveness until all that is left is love for each other s true selves. Their process before, during, and after the transplant encourages them to take risks of authenticity in other aspects their lives. But life does not follow the storylines we plan for it. Maggie s body is ultimately too weak to fight the relentless illness. As she and Lesser prepare for the inevitable, they grow ever closer as their shared blood cells become a symbol of the enduring bond they share. Told with suspense and humor, Marrow is joyous and heartbreaking, incandescent and profound. The story reveals how even our most difficult experiences can offer unexpected spiritual growth. Reflecting on the multifaceted nature of love love of other, love of self, love of the world Marrow is an unflinching and beautiful memoir about getting to the very center of ourselves."

"My father had nothing but impatience for anything that smacked of soul-searching. His answer to whatever ailed anyone was to go outside and tramp around in the woods. Even though he was born in Brooklyn, and we lived on Long Island, and he worked in Manhattan, his heart was set on returning to his soul‘s homeland, his Jerusalem: the state of Vermont."

saresmoore My dad just returned from a visit to Asheville. When I asked him about his trip, he said, "It was fine, but I like Vermont much better." ?? 7y
Suet624 I just saw this comment @saresmoore. That's surprising to me. I've never been to Asheville but I heard it was quite beautiful. I definitely know I like Vermont political views better than North Carolina's. 7y
saresmoore @Suet624 That last sentence is an understatement! Haha! He was certainly factoring in political views, but he also considers native horticulture, environmental/sustainability practices, and population density/busyness—all of which are favorable in VT! 7y

Pickpick

Lesser, cofounder of Omega Institute, has written a very personal story about the death of her sister, Maggie Lake. Lesser talks about her less than stellar relationship with Maggie, her decision to donate stem cells, and their use of therapy sessions to give those stem cells a chance to succeed. It's a study in how people can repair relationships and in remembering that, ultimately, love always comes first.

Lmstraubie I read this book by her and really enjoyed her straight forward sharing of such personal events and emotions. I'm looking forward to diving into this one. 7y
Suet624 @Lmstraubie I've just finished a section on Susan Sontag's death in The Violet Hour. The difference in acceptance and intention between the two approaches to death is stunning. Not that I would ever criticize how someone approaches death, but...wow. 7y
Lmstraubie Another one stacked. Different perspectives always are interesting to say the least. 7y
Suet624 @Lmstraubie absolutely. Not sure how I got on this theme of death, but so it is ... 😁😏 7y

This book is full of lovely quotes.

lynneamch Love this. ❤ Reminds me of a favorite quote from Ira Progoff (if memory serves): Go deeply into your own well, until you reach the underground stream that feeds all wells. 7y
Suet624 @lynneamch Oh, that's a wonderful quote! Thanks for sharing it. 🌹 7y
