In the summer of 1895, at the height of the Gilded Age, Newport, Rhode Island is the playground of the social elite. And the only thing they fear is scandal. So when, Joe Ballard, a member of a prestigious family is found kneeling over the body of a murdered maid, he turns desperately to the only person he can trust to clear his name - Deanna Randolph, a reluctant ally in this mysterious case.

I don't mean to be rude, or maybe I do, but this was interminably silly. I would have bailed as soon as the 18-year-old "feminist" protagonist & her maid encountered the obeah servant of the sugar magnate & described him as the largest & blackest man they ever did see. I mean? But this fulfilled the nobility prompt for #CloakAndDaggerChristmas so I kept on. A much better book would have had the entire cast of characters pushed off a cliff.

batsy I'm sorry that I cut the cover off halfway in the photo; I thought the hibiscus were far more important 😆🌺 1y
Cathythoughts Yes the hibiscus is gorgeous. Nice cover on the book too 👍🏻❤️ 1y
merelybookish Well that's a bummer. Hope your next mystery is better! 1y

Bailedbailed

I'm not doing well with my recent #cozymysteries. I bailed on this one as soon as the love triangle setup became obvious.

Tove_Reads Have you read Jenn McKinlay‘s Library lover‘s mystery series or book retreat mysteries by Ellery Adams? 6y
melissanorr I have read and (mostly) enjoyed the Library Lovers series. I tried the Book Retreat series and didn't care for it. 6y

Pickpick

I enjoyed the references to the dime novels, lady detectives, and that the heroine is a reader. Deanna also reminded me of Nancy Drew! I also liked the historical setting in Newport during the Gilded Age.

BlogginBoutBooks I really enjoyed this one, too. 7y

Mehso-so

I was traveling and uber busy and didn't have much reading time these past few days 😩 But I finished this one that I'd started a while ago. This sounded like a great read for me; I love historical mysteries and the Newport setting was especially fun since I've been there. But unfortunately, it was forgettable and I'm not sure I'll pick up the next one.

CoffeeAndABook 🌻Hope your next read provides you with way more of what you're looking for!!!! 🎆 8y
raelaschoenherr @CoffeeAndABook I have a couple sure hits that just came in :) 8y
