The Windy Season
The Windy Season | Sam Carmody
7 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
Sam Carmody is a real literary talent, with an artist's inquiring mind and a natural feel for the beauty and toughness of language. Charlotte Wood, author of the award-winning The Natural Way of Things A young fisherman is missing from the crayfish boats in the harsh West Australian coastal town of Stark. There's no trace at all of Elliot, there hasn't been for some weeks and Paul, his younger brother, is the only one who seems to be active in the search. Taking Elliot's place on their antagonistic cousin's boat, Paul soon learns how many opportunities there are to get lost in those many thousands of kilometres of lonely coastline. Fierce, evocative and memorable, this is an Australian story set within an often wild and unforgiving sea, where mysterious influences are brought to bear on the inhospitable town and its residents.

Pickpick

I really enjoyed this eerie and confronting coming of age. With a limited plot it was down to the characters to draw you in and be interesting and they certainly were. Every character had their own distinct voice and all were a little withdrawn, sullen and down trodden. Much like the town the novel is centred round.

Helpful advice ? This is what passes for "winter" here. We're all miserably whinging about how bloody cold it is.

#WTForecast

Hooked_on_books It's warmer there than here, and it's nearly "summer" now! ? 7y

CocoReads That temp definitely falls within my 5 degree comfort zone! 7y
Marchpane @Hooked_on_books @LauraKath @MKbookworm @Melissa_J Haha, I prefer it too, our summers are stinkers though! I'm at mum's and she has the heater going and keeps nagging me to put something on my feet 😂 7y
LauraKath Wow then it really is hot there 😂😂 7y
Scurvygirl I think most of us in the US going through the recent heatwave would love a day like that right about now! 😹 Also my favorite kind of day, 65-80 degrees. Any warmer or colder my body starts to shut down. Enjoy! 7y
Izai.Amorim Kind of temperature we have in northeastern Brazil and people dress up in thick winter coats more appropriate for European winter. You have to say,"Boy, if the winter you're expecting does come, we are in deep trouble!"? 7y

8little_paws Thanks for sharing. I find here in the US there is no info on books from Australia. I've literally never read an Australian author. And now I can change that! 7y
Michelle_mck @8little_paws I hope you find one and enjoy it! 7y
Sue Good selection - I've heard great things about all of those, but haven't read them yet! 7y
